Thai People Urged To Use Thai Language Properly

Featured Replies

The Royal Institute will launch an on-line version of the 1999 edition of its Thai dictionary on sanook.com at the end of next month to promote correct usage of the Thai language.

Does anyone know what's happened to the current on-line version? It's disappeared from http://rirs3.royin.go.th/ridictionary/lookup.html .

Richard, it appears the Royal Institute has launched ahead of schedule, and the old dictionary is now offline. The new link is http://rirs3.royin.go.th/dictionary.asp

Language may be dynamic, but there are many basic errors in normal usage.

Is it Rhor Rua, or Lor Lua for a boat????????

It mimics the joke I learned as a child, of the chinese saying,

"Alound the lugged lock the lagged larscal lan".

The common mispronunciation makes life very difficult for farangs

and Thai children learning to spell............

And who is to say which pronunciation is correct and which is incorrect? Yet of course the dialect with the army behind it becomes the official language and the other dialects become incorrect. But apart from minor irregular errors like spoonerisms, there are no errors in basic usage.

Thanks.

It's not as thorough as the old page. For example, it doesn't regularly give the pronunications, so it gives no hint that ก๊าซ 'gas' can be pronounced [H]kaas.

On the other hand, it does work with Firefox, unlike the old page.
