PHUKET:-- Local environmental officers today (Feb 19) began testing wastewater discharged by hotels in Patong in response to raw sewage flowing into Patong Bay some 11 days ago.

“We have just started to inspect and test wastewater at hotels in Patong,” Khanchit Soontrakorn of the Regional Environment Office (Region 15), which is based in Phuket confirmed to The Phuket News today.

“Today, we collected samples from three randomly selected hotels. We want to find out the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) of the wastewater discharged at each hotel, so we can determine the toxicity of the sewage being released,” he said.

Getting to the point that the Thai authorities might have to bite-the-bullet in many places in Thailand and do as the Victorians did in London long ago when the waste problem got too out of control....i.e. dig everything up and actually make a decent waste water system that can be still in use and effective over a 100 years later after you finish it. Guess though that the problem is still not pressing enough yet.

Local environmental officers should just use their nose and rate the smell from 1-10. Then match that smell back to the water at Patong. Case solved.
