i took the Lomprayah ferry from ko tao to chumphon. yesterday.  boat was to leave at 10:15 am . first boat left about on time. Half of the people were told (me included) that we would wait for a second boat.  arriving 11 am.  then at 12 noon. after i see the staff at Lomprayah giving out soda and tea to us.  i ask them "when is boat coming" and she says 2:15pm.  apparently thier was  another boat on the way but it had engine trouble and had to turn back . we finally left ko tao at 315.pm, due to the fact we waited again for another boat to bring samui folks aboard......didnt sea tran used to have a boat from ko tao to chumphon?  why dont they have one now. Lomprayah needs more competition.  And Lomprayahs 20 kg baggage limit is more restrictive than an airline?  I wonder if Lomprayah is paying someone so thier is not competition.?

Very easy.

Take a share songtheaw to the railway station from the pier, or go to the bus station.

I think you are giving them too much credit by saying there is a "connecting" train. There are trains in the day, but check the times. Depending on the time of year/ day of the week, the railcar may be full, but should be able to get a bus except on holidays.

Plenty of cheap hotels to hang out in while waiting.

i would consider the night boat.  i assume u get a mattress to sleep on . and i would assume people are quiet??????????  and if i could get to a train with no hassle i would consider it...... people take lomprayah because its all figured out for you. but as a company i dont really like lomprayah............i prefer seat tran..........i have alot of luggage so i actually fly to krabi stay a few days. and then take sea tran over to the island...........sea tran much more relaxed than lomprayah. just a bit slower of a boat though..........

From what I read on the internet, the night boat has bunks now. The boat I went on many years ago had mattresses on the floor, but apparently that is no longer used.

I enjoyed seeing the dawn over Tao as we arrived there.
