webfact
Prayut tells ministers to ‘monitor’ Cambodian election in July By The Nation Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday told his ministerial colleagues to monitor the general election due to be held in Cambodia this July. “Please keep an eye on the election because we don’t want anyone to have problems. We are all in the Asean region,” Prayut told the Cabinet before their weekly meeting. General Wanlop Raksanor, secretary-general of the National Security Council, explained that monitoring was essential since the election could result in a change in the make-up of the ruling government and therefore changes in Cambodia’s national policy. “When neighboring countries hold elections, we have to see whether they have effects on our country and whether their elections are organised properly,” he said. The general election will be held after the PM Hun Sen-led Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) gained a landslide victory in the country’s senate elections last month. The massive win would most likely ensure a stronger position in the National Assembly for the CPP – which has already won four consecutive elections – following July’s national poll. Popular Post spidermike007
Thailand is a nation surrounded by despot leaders. On one side, you have a serial killing dictator, who is accepted by the West as a democratically elected leader, and used to be a leader in the Kymer Rouge, where he was responsible for tens of thousands of murders. He now routinely steals land, kills the opposition, jails anyone he does not like, and has amassed a fortune into the billions of dollars. And he is still acknowledged worldwide, and supported by weak kneed countries like the US and the UK. One the other side, you have a military regime in Burma, that has ceded a minimum of power to the civilians, in order to attract hundreds of billions in foreign investment, mostly from China. They are still involved in selling billions annually in heroin, opium, and illegal rubies, and are engaged in genocide against the Rohinga, with the support of the so called lady, who is actually complicit in their own serial killings. Most of the top generals are billionaires, and Than Shwe, the so called former leader, is worth tens of billions. Wow. Really nice neighbors. "We are all in the Asean region,” . . . well, you can't argue with that. That's what I admire most about Prayut. Very few other world leaders are able to grasp a situation and be able to get the message across to their cabinets, in quite the same way as this clown. Indochina is regressing backwards. Vietnam and Laos aren't really socialist. Only in the same mode as those old East European Democratic Socialist Republics, full of corruption for the benefit of those who are "more equal". The military still rule Burma and Hun Sen is busy installing his one party one family controlled dynasty by butchering real democracy. Philippines have a nutter in charge who seems to be heading down the Marcos road whilst Indonesia moves more and more towards becoming an Islamic state. Malaysia will either stay under the corrupt current regime or by taken back by the dictatorial Dr. M. And good old Singapore remains as successful and repressive as ever. (Wonder if they've had to pay more bribes to stop Thailand constructing the canal that would screw them?). Looking real rosy!

JAG
Actually watching the Cambodian election makes sense. Any serious disruption, opposition gains or even increased governmental repression can be used - "We don want to be like Cambodia, so maybe we had better look again at how we are going to run our election..."
