I've studied in Thailand for one year with an ED (education) visa. Due to my personal issue, I have to halt my study. I have planned to leave Thailand overland (via Malaysia) without cancelling my ED visa. My questions are:

If I did not cancel my ED visa and left Thailand overland, would that cause any trouble for my re-application for a new ED visa at Thai embassy in my country (Indonesia) in the future when I would wish to return to Thailand to continue my incomplete university study? Would Thai embassy in my country issue me a new ED visa in the future if they find out that my old (current) ED visa having no cancellation stamp ?

Besides the option of applying for an ED visa at the embassy of Thailand in my country, is it possible for me to apply for an ED visa (for higher education) in a different country within ASEAN, such as Malaysia, Laos, etc. ?

It is said that if I cancelled my ED visa, there would only be 7 days left to exit the country. Is it possible to exit Thailand via a border checkpoint rather than via flight ?

Thanks

I believe this is what's been posted in similar ED Visa threads:

If you plan to leave via an overland border, some may hold or not allow your exit without presenting an official letter from the school stating the date your enrollment in studies ended.

Even if immigration allows your exit without presenting the school letter, some people have later reported issues with immigration offices refusing extension of stay applications until a valid school clearance letter is presented.

Thank you,

So it'd be better to cancel my ED visa before leaving the country, right?

It is said that if an ED visa is cancelled, then passport holder has only 7 days to exit Thailand. Is it compulsory to exit by flight or I could exit by land ?

And after exiting the country, is it OK to re-enter on 30 day exempt ?

Talk with your school.

A ED-Visa holder from 2015 was given this advice:

If you valid multiple entry non-ed visa it will remain valid until it expires. It is not tied to attending a school.

Only if you have an extension of stay from immigration would you need a letter and it would not be needed at Chong Mek. I suspect you will need to cross before 6 pm. The Lao visa on arrival office will probably only open until then.

Yes, I know you're talking about exiting overland via Malaysia.

I've only found two overland border crossings that may pose an issue requiring school papers if leaving before the school term is completed: NongKhai crossing to Vientiane, and Mukdahan crossing to Savannakhet (LAOS).

The 'cancellation' really involves ED-Visa holders who are not attending required classes or not carrying a minimum required class load and the assigned school notifying Thai Immigration and Immigration filing paperwork to cancel the 'extension of stay' to 7-days.

ED-Visa holders, who don't have any pending issues with the school or Immigration, can usually leave Thailand any time they wish.

If the ED-Visa isn't multiple entry, then you shouldn't have any issue returning on a 30-day exempt when presenting a passport from a qualifying country.

Thanks for your useful information.

Through your quote of the member ubonjoe's words, I've found two relevant threads (here and here), containing valuable information.

As said a visa or an entry from it cannot be cancelled by immigration.

If you have extended a permit to stay you got from a ED visa entry immigration can cancel it. In this case you would need a letter from the school stating you are no longer attending classes effective on a certain date to cancel it on that date.

What he wrote is related to my case as I'm on the extension of stay. I haven't left Thailand after entering the country using my ED visa and extended my stay every three months. So, I may have to contact my school to get the letter as ubonjoe mentioned.

If I would like to return to Thailand to continue my study in the future, is it possible to re-apply for a Thai ED visa in a different country such as Malaysia, Laos, etc, other than my country of residence (Indonesia) ?

In some other thread, people wrote that they got their ED visa (for language school) in Vientiane (Laos), rather than in their country of residence.

Could you give me links to the threads discussing about problem with school papers at NongKhai crossing to Vientiane, and Mukdahan crossing to Savannakhet (LAOS) ?

Thanks in advance.

Again, I'd suggest you ask your school if they know of a current requirement.

It's not easy to keep up with individual border office requirements.

Found a few more recent ThaiVisa threads   ...where apparently NongKhai had stopped requiring the letter, but then recently started up again.

Just looked their site. And says they are asking for it again. It really makes no sense unless a person has been attending a university that allows them one year renewable extension. The max is a year total if attending a informal school and I would think that the paperwork for new non-ed visa would be enough if asked about the extension.

since 1st November Thai Immigration Nong Khai require you to have the cancellation letter for Non B, Non ED ready or even better if you have cancelled it beforehand.

I recently left the country through Nong Khai without cancelling my ED visa first and didn't have any problems, and I know several other people from my school who have done the same during the past few months. I'm on a second ED visa now but haven't done an extension yet, so we'll see if I have any problems with that.

No, no issues at all with any of the extensions of the second ED visa.
