webfact
Drink driving - treat it as seriously as human trafficking, PM urged Picture: Komchadluek The head of Thailand's anti drink driving foundation has challenged Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to get tough on drink drivers. Dr Thaejing Siripanich told Komchadluek that measures to reduce the carnage had consistently failed over the last ten years. It was time to get tough - drink drivers should face the same penalties as those convicted of human trafficking as their effect on society was similarly severe. Dr Thaejing was speaking as a Songkran collaboration was announced with the Department of Probation who announced new measures for punishing their civil servants caught drink driving. DOP director Prasan Mahaleetrakul said that new regulations meant that any of his staff caught drink driving face the prospect of expulsion from the civil service. The DOP work closely with police and other agencies on road traffic matters at times like Songkran. Dr Thaejing said that last year 390 people died in the "seven deadly days" of Songkran. There was every reason to believe that the death toll this year would again be between 300 and 400. Popular Post stanleycoin
I can never tell the difference between a drunk or sober Driver/ Rider in Thailand, most drive the same. Drunk driving / Riding is an issue, but it's not the big issue. It's all about attitude and what they are allowed to get away with on the roads. Most are just Murderous, Dangerous, Selfish people. The worst in the world. (official title now for Thailand ) Hope your proud of yourselves. Telling the truth about drivers and riders is just to hard, so they hide behind the drunk driver / rider thing, it's viewed as an excepted excuse in Thai society. truly disgraceful. Popular Post smedly
Drink driving - treat it as seriously as human trafficking, PM urged and add to that the use of mobile phones Then get the police to actually enforce the laws and not just deal with the aftermath when laws are broken 3

The PM could if he wanted to but he won't touch it with a barge pole because there is little in it for him in terms of popularity gain. Given there would likely be a very unfavourable reaction against the PM from the millions of drink drivers who are on the roads daily he is sure to put this in his too hard basket. The choice between the PM's public admiration standing versus people's lives his popularity rankings will win the day every time. With really, I mean really tighten the drink driving rules and general traffic regulations include enforcement here I think there are more, shall we say influential people, than drink drivers which could turn their head at next roundtable......
Popular Post Anythingleft?
As with most of the running stories here the real issue is the lack of enforcement and day to day governance by the RTP. This is not an issue of just one time annually, although it may be slightly higher during this festival. All the rules, regulations and laws already exist but nowhere are they enforced on a practical daily basis unless it is the form of a publicised purge.Actually really interested to know what kind of training or examinations the RTP have here and, how knowledgable they are on the laws in place. It all just seems like its too much bother for them unless they see it as financially beneficial..Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk 5

Exactly, but fixing this will require more than opening your mouth in front of some media and babbling a bit, only to go back to your desk afterwards trying to figure out how you can skim a few billion baht more from the country. Coconut007
Imo you should increase tax on beer and wine, while keeping the petrol whisky cheap as chips. That will teach those bloody drinkers!

Cake Monster
Drink Driving is not as serious as Human Trafficking. Its a bloody sight more serious because it is murder if some poor innocent soul dies- not with a gun, or knife, but with a vehicle of some description being intentionally driven by some person who has decided to drive while being under the influence of drink ( or drugs ), and using it as a murder weapon.. eliotness
I see many drivers AND motorcylists using mobile phones and the latest video showing the nurse being hit by a car while waiting at tracfic lights suggests the driver was doing just that. Using mobile phones, especially texting while driving, should recieve a serious penalty. To pick on just one aspect of bad driving, i.e. drunk driving, won't solve the problem EVEN IF IT WERE TO BE ENFORCED.
