CHONBURI:--Chonburi has been declared a “red zone” for rabies following a recent outbreak.

The Department of Livestock Development said March 7 that the province is one of 13 where the disease is running rampant. The others are Rayong, Chachoengsao, Buriram, Chiang Rai, Nan, Roi Et, Samut Prakan, Songkhla, Si Saket, Surin, Tak and Ubon Ratchathani.

Forty-two provinces have been declared “yellow zones” with just 20 free of the disease.

Three deaths have been recorded this year in Chonburi – in Ban Bung, Bo Thong and Muang districts.

Health officials blamed unvaccinated pets and strays as the main vector for spread of the disease.

This will make it worse in Rayong, there will be more Bangkok & Chonburi number plates dumping their dogs here on the beach.

Yesterday morning using the back road off Naklua road to Banglemung Hospital I counted twenty three stray dogs on the waste ground adjacent to the hospital  car park

So many contradictions. Is this under control. or running rampant or, quite possibly, non existent ?  Expect dog haters and animal haters generally to be on the warpath. Could get very unpleasant whether or not any of this is true.

Not sure how serious it is, we have millions of stray dogs here, but maybe a warning to stay away from stray dogs.

Aren't foreigners lower than dogs on the social hiearchy?

If true, can trouble be had for beating away an aggressive potentially rabid dog?

Yes I can see the sense in that, but they might have different plans

And here was me thinking that in a country with extensive land borders, no control over strays, no government neutering or vaccination campaigns and a population who believe that feeding stray dogs and cats bring rewards, there could be a serious risk of rabies.

So relieved to hear it's just spin from people don't like dogs.
