Trump signs U.S.-Taiwan travel bill that China has opposed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Friday signed legislation that would allow U.S. officials to travel to Taiwan to meet their Taiwanese counterparts, a move certain to anger China, which views Taiwan as a wayward province.

The bill, which is non-binding, would have gone into effect on Saturday morning, even if Trump had not signed it, said the White House.

The move adds to strains between the two countries over trade, as Trump has enacted tariffs and called for China to reduce its trade imbalance with the United States, even while Washington has leaned on Beijing to help resolve tensions with North Korea.

On Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang reiterated that Beijing was opposed to the legislation and urged the United States to abide by the "one China" policy and cease official exchanges with Taiwan.

The United States does not have formal ties with Taiwan but is required by law to help it with self-defence and is the island's primary source of weapons.

Donald had to sign it on Friday because he's rarely at the White House on weekends anymore because on Friday afternoons he usually flies off to one of his golfing resorts in Air Force One (at great expense) for a weekend of golf...usually goes to Mar-a-Logo in Florida.

I am assuming he is billing the office of the president to pay for his trips... IE he is using US taxes to pay for his stay at his hotel/resort  and making a profit doing it... (not mention all the secret service agents and staff that travel with him)... He basically drained the swamp right into the White House.

He doesn't own the resort or anything else. He signed it all away, remember? If he went to Camp David would you still be whining? Same transportation, same SS agents, same staff. If so, you should complain about every single president in history from the time CD opened.

I'm all for this action. It would be sweet if he could help Taiwan become a free country. Could be part of the larger picture for the upcoming talks with NK. China could give up Taiwan, the US could pull out of SK and relocate to Taiwan. The 2 Koreas could begin work on unification. Both China and Russia would have a more prosperous country to trade with and no US troop presence on their southern border. Many possibilities.
