I use Bkk taxis several times a day. I must say that it appears that some of the drivers have a death wish if one judges by the way they drive.

So my question is whether the meter taxis are required to carry liability insurance in case of an accient. If so, who monitors whether the insurance is in effect or expired?

Any vehicle that has a current "2550" registration sticker in the windshield has had to prove that they have the very minimum level of insurance (which covers personal injuries) before that sticker was issued.

So- if you're really paranoid about it... look for an orange sticker with 2550 in the windshield.

From my own experience:

It's now 5 years ago that a friend of mine and me had a very heavy accident with a taxi.

Luckily it was a taxi from Thai Airways (Thai Limousine Service) with such an insurance.

Car was speeding and reckless driving ( that's what the police report said) but at the end we had to fight nearly 5 years through many courts here and we had very good lawyer(Thai).
