Election commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn has been removed from his office at the order of General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Prime Minister Prayut, in his capacity as head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), exercised his power under Article 44 of the provisional charter.

Somchai’s termination as an Election Commission member became effective yesterday, when the junta chief’s order was announced in the Royal Gazette.

The order also stated that any other EC member who reaches the retirement age of 70 shall be able to continue his work until a new set of election commissioners take over from the current EC members.

The order said that Somchai had carried out inappropriate behaviour by causing public confusion in his remarks with the media about the election process. Also, Somchai was in conflict of interest by applying to become EC secretary-general without resigning from his current post, it added.

Initially, acting EC secretary-general Jarungwit Phumma said four election commissioners made a valid quorum. He said the EC could still make decisions with four commissioners under the previous law.

However, he said he was not sure how many people it took to make a quorum under the new law, where the EC has seven members.

sure, the inmates are running the asylum;

probing question is where is any projectible end point to all of this ; we seem to be saddled with, at a minimum, of another 12 months of the current idiots, and...surely more delays;

we are all fools,being played

I am not going to consider him as a martyre or hero at all. He was much less eager to make elections succeed in January 2014. Actually, the main reason he gets a sudden interest for democracy is because he had not been rewarded for licking the boots of the military and their allies. Serves him right! :cheesy:

Anyone who embarrasses the PM gets the chop. Just like the fool who stuffed up the registration of foreign workers.

He is a sensitive and insecure man who worries what people think of him. Plus he needs to maintain his "control freak" image to keep to keep his subordinates in line.

Reminds me of another country over the pond!

But there is an issue with people in positions of responsibility spouting off, off the cuff, and causing confusion. I suppose it has to stop with the man at the top!

'a further delay would not be good for the country’s image because the Thai public and foreigners had been told all along the general election would take place around November this year.'

What's next after his comment, will he be charged for high treason, threat to national security, or just tarnishing the image of the country?

Yes serves him right.

If Somchai and the other EC members had any respect for the Constitution and loyalty to the Thai electorate, they should have resigned to:

  • protest to Prayut's abolishment of the 2007 Constitution in 2014
  • challenge Prayut's failed promises to hold new elections in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
  • their continued membership that violated the 2017 Constitution.

When you suckle a pig's tit, you deserve to lie in its crap.

This guy, Somchai, said in late January of this year regarding the election delay:

'a further delay would not be good for the country’s image because the Thai public and foreigners had been told all along the general election would take place around November this year.'

For saying this, he gets booted out. Nice to know that Thailand's  great democratic leader (he has told us so himself) is open to other viewpoints than his own.

But of course we are not allowed to use a word beginning with 'D'. That would be most unfair towards a progressive and liberal leader (and of course we would never wish to be that ...)! But I'll use the word anyway: 'Dinosaur'. There! I said it!

Spot on! The best term for the current leadership style is forbidden but it seems every significant move regarding an election further validates the use of the word as being the most accurate. Until a significant increase in public pressure regarding the election increases there will continue to be a loot of smoke and mirrors but not an election. And, as in Somchai's case, anyone suggesting a firm date or any commitment in regard to an election will face the wrath of the current leadership.
