First I would like to say, that you have very high demands. it must be a cutie non bargirl that has big maraccas and she have to greet you with a "hi" in a public space. Wow! Only that gave me great chills down the spine! 

However, wouldn´t you think that a polite "Hi" back would be suitable? And how do you "hi" her back and forth? She will surely get tired of you repeating yourself so much.

Of course I will "hi" her back and even "hi" her from the front later,  if I am on a lucky day !! ...and obviously, before would need to chat her up with the usual rubbish that can work,  if the gal likes you  of course !!...

 

But to make it a bit more clear, I was not refering to the situation as a standard requirement....was refering to it in the sense that "if" such a situation  did present itself to me, I would respond and not plainly look away, as suggested by some before on the issue of responding to strangers in public. ....Have a nice evening.

almost every night...but I cannot say how it ended as my wake up alarm usually rings,  just when the fun starts

There was a time when I also used to avoid contact with other "farang" I didn't know but now I realize the error of my ways and am very receptive to other foreigners saying hello and wanting to have a conversation. OP, I find it odd that a foreigner waiting at an immigration office would not want to talk to you. Thai government offices (including the Land Transport Department) are places where I've met numerous interesting people over the years.

 

As for those comments like "you wouldn't do it in your country" well that depends. Firstly, in some European countries like Switzerland, it is actually still common for strangers to greet each other when they pass each other on the streets or if someone enters a restaurant they say hello to all the people they pass on the way to their table. This doesn't happen in the big cities, but in small towns it is not only common but considered proper and polite to do so.

Also, in your own home country you are not special as most other people look like you. In Thailand, where westerners are a tiny minority making up perhaps at best 1% of the population, saying hello to another westerner is acknowledging they are, like you foreigners in this country and it helps to bring about a sense of community. I think it's a very nice gesture when another westerner/expat says hello to me in Thailand or any other country in the region.

And considering the existence of farangs who boot lick to try to upgrade their status in Thai society,  by snitching or sneaking on their co-farangs [i.e.visa overstayers]....one can perhaps understand some extent of reserve in the interactions between farang to another stranger farang.

Everytime I give grandma som money, she give me a 5 minute speak about lucky life everytime, so it is the longest speaches I have from another thai here in Thailand!

Most books are sold by Amazon as e-novels or downloaded from other sources.

who mentioned bookshops? but since you did, folks that read novels and poetry collections  of slightly higher quality than what youre used to at 7-11 still like the feel of a real book.
