I havn't made an OP in a few years but thought this was important enough to bring it to people's attention.

Never carried any paperwork.  One time at a police checkpoint in Loei, a kid (perhaps Indian?) accused me of stealing his bike.  Cops didn't pay any attention. They did flag me down once or twice just to chew the fat. I got to practice my Thai and they, their English. Even got a few words of wisdom from a monk who was waiting for a bus.
