Popular Post webfact
Speed limits in and outside urban area under change to curb traffic fatalities and facilitate driving By Thai PBS The Royal Thai Police and the Ministry of Interior are now considering an amendment to the Land Transport Law that will see speed limits from 80 kilometres an hour adjusted to 110 kilometres to facilitate driving on highways, and to 60 Kms in urban area. The 80-km speed limit on some roads has been set by the law since 1979 or over 37 years and was outdated. Today there have been much improvement on road construction which allows speed of up to 120 kilometres, said Pol Maj Gen Akkarak Limsangkas, a member of the working group on traffic of the Royal Thai Police. Under the 1979 land transport law, speed limit in municipal area was set at 80 kms/hr and 90 Kms outside municipal area. He said the law fixed the speed limit at 80-90kms because at that time most roads have only two traffic lanes. 4evermaat
Slower traffic keep left. Higher speeds on expressways, and lower speed in higher density areas. Honestly though, more air con transportation or even open air to curb individual car use would be great. Popular Post leeneeds
Enforcement of the laws, would be a good starting point, and I agree with most, slow traffic to use the middle inside lanes, but no , ignorant drivers persist in sitting in the outside lane, given space and stopping distance between the car in front, IF the driver pays attention to driving there is no reason not have speed limit increased, where it is safely deemed to do so, Unfortunately, as it stands now, more speed without enforcement and driving with due care, will result in a lot more rear ends, The 120km on the Airport link works well, coming from Korat (most times ) not perfec,t but a lot better manners than most other roads I drive, 7
Popular Post TallGuyJohninBKK
This way when inevitably the "brakes fail" on the truck or bus, it will have a good head of steam going at 110 kph and can pretty much wipe out anything in its path! 5 1

Approaching this, the most accident-prone time of year, is it the right time to even talk about lifting a 37-yr-old limit by a massive 37.5%? If this change is implemented, it's to be hoped the authorities - hospitals, especially - have planned for people killing themselves 37.5% faster, booze affected or otherwise. 5

Popular Post terryp
at last some sense, all you experts spouting about how stupid raising the limit is need to wake up, most of these idiotic accidents are caused by people exceeding the current 90kph yes the massively fast 56mph!!! ..newsflash what ever the speed limit these people will go as fast as THEY want regardless of what a sign says...what is needed is correct law enforcement and rule of the road enforcement as in lane hoggers . 120 or around 70mph is quite normal on 3 lane highways and always was until taxin dropped it down to 90kph ...to save the country tax on high oil price when it was around 150$ a barrel 14

It's not that they don't understand these 'norms' . . . it's simply that, in this 'anything goes' country, implementing all or any of these is simply too much trouble for the many departments involved; a bit like the laissez faire politics in the ancient west . . . if it ain't broke - too much, that is - why fix it?

I am not American nor have I lived in the USA but even in their over regulated safety conscious society speed limits have risen since the old 55 mph days. So why not. Most people in Thailand already drive at 120 kph on good upcountry roads, Even 110 on Bangkok urban expressways. It all sounds very Thai to me? Increase speed limits in some places , reduce them in others.
ratcatcher
The people I really feel sorry for are the owners of super-cars, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches etc who really need to open up and get ahead of the crowd..I forgot Fortuners, they are really a special case.

Popular Post Sir Dude
Increase or decrease the limits as you like, as if anyone on the roads gives a damn about the speed limits anyhow. The problem is with the average driver who thinks the laws are just for other people, not him/her...because it's ME! 2

What you don't want is her spending money up her nose................ 2

madmin
Speed kills the faster you go, better to have a more stringent driving test add a few roundabouts instead of uturns and annual safety checks on cars, increasing the speed will increase your chances of death

car720
On a serious note though. In my opinion, no matter where it is, the big problem is the combination of impatience with speed that usually leads to tailgating. Especially by heavy vehicles. timewilltell
As everyone here is saying - there will be no change unless the Thai Government insist the police enforce the law. On top of that, they should have police out pulling over drivers who are simply ignorant or selfish or most probably both. Stop the lane hoggers and tell them to drive on the left, stop the motorcycles and some cars even riding the wrong way up the road and tell them at the same time as dishing out fines for the most stupid offenders. We all know it so why don't the Thais do it? I actually have a pretty good idea of the answer to that but do not want to excite the Thai apologists nor listen to their feeble excuses.
