Would be rather stupid to decide not to live in a Country because of four days of Songran

Almost as stupid as resorting to that highly  overused phrase "If they don't like it bugger off back to where you came from! ?"

I wouldn't dislike Songkran so much if it was celebrated, as in much of the country for a single day. In Pattaya wherever you go for 10 days you are likely to get soaked, even late in the evening afte

I've had lots of fun at Songkran in the past, in an area designated for 'water play' with likeminded others.    But, Songkran always attracts those unable to temper their behavior, usually a

I was 33 early days here in Thailand I did not have much to do so i jumped on stuff like Songkran. At the time everything was new and an adventure. Making trips to get whole wheat flower.. finding stuff ect... at first in the immediate area there was not much to do. Hard to find stuff too..

I jumped on Songkran a few times over the years too, so I wasn't GOM the whole time lol. As you're too young to be GOM, you can only be GYM (grumpy young man).

I think you need to be drunk to enjoy it.

Come on, these threads are only a bit of fun. We insult Songkran lovers, they insult us back. Gives us something to do while we're holed up waiting for it to finish LOL

Songkran is fun for 1 day , not 10 days . That's the whole problem with Songkran in Pattaya and why so many expats escape the city.

I have escaped myself , to Bangkok and the OnNut area,  Today is the first day of Songkran and I am still dry , I haven't seen anyone trying to throw water at people, I went to the shops , had a coffee , everyone were relaxed.  Not a lot of foreigners , mostly Thais dressed up for the occasion. We had a parade here with Songkran music in the street . Everything was very respectful.

So Pattaya is just a wild mess and I can understand that expats wants to get away from 10 days of nightmare , the other option is to stay indoor for 10 days and that's no fun either.

I've lived in Hua Hin for 8 years now, and I am thankful they only celebrate it for a day, some areas 2 at most. 10 days is insane, and I would suggest 5 is way too much! I find a single day annoying though, so I may be biased on that

We get Bangkok, Naklua and Pattaya Songkran rolled into one long week. Being close to Bangkok, all the Songkran crazies up there come down for a second round.

Its ok where we live a few kids with water pistols but keep out of Pattaya stupid to keep it going 10 days it was ok for 1 day when we were in BKK

I hate the aggressive louts both Thai and non Thai who assault  people with water, ruin their clothes, documents, equipment, endanger their lives by water throwing near electricity in bars etc. I am worried that I might respond in a violent way. So I leave Thailand. This year I've come to Hainan in China. Two hours flight from UTP. Last year Saigon, the year before Hanoi, another time Angeles City.

LOL> did you come back to this thread to gloat? Are you having a good time in China?

Pattaya? And now with the ferry open and in service, you may get Songkran revellers from here in HH who want some more action lol

No sure you need to be drunk.

Just did a quick trip to the IKEA, we thought it would be empty and we wanted some food. So hop on the motorcycle.. no water throwing anywhere on the route. But once in the IKEA it was full of people.. not what I expected.

Pattaya needs to get tough and stop Songkran going on far too long 10 days or more crazy. 2 days is enough. Any wonder so many expats get out of town

I don't disagree with your complaint  but I wonder how the authorities can go about reducing it to two days?

Would they need to arrest anyone carrying water?

It will be interesting to see how the packs of Chinease react when wet through

You can't get that wet In an a/c bus or 7/11

I don't actually mind Songkran too much. One day of getting wet is when I go out is enough for me though.

The only problem I have with it are auld fellas out splashing water - they should do something more productive with their time and leave the splashing to the younger ones.

With effort. I shan't be returning. Nobody speaks English so its difficult to get anything done. I wish I gone to Vietnam.

The picture from the OP says it all really.  Especially the genius behind the long, powerful stream hitting high balconies from street level.   image.png.49277216c420f8ac505d348159b0e722.png

I went out in a pick up truck once a couple years ago; in the cab, not in the back.

Remember feeling like the only adult in the room thinking about not running someone over because they weren't paying attention or they couldn't see/hear properly with all that shit on their face and in their ears.  Or having someone slip/fall out of the back of the truck.   Yeah, I know, Mr. Sah-tafe-tee man and all that.  LOL.

What really got me were the kids on motorbikes who weren't out to "play Songkran", rather just trying to get somewhere - one I saw in his Tesco gear headed to work.  I watched people like this speed up, tuck their heads down near the handlebars and close their eyes as they ran past the douche bags manning the "fun" bucket brigades along the road.

The low level stupidity over and over again, year after year..... meh.... I just give it a miss.  Call me a miserable old git.  Killjoy.  Whatever.   At some point, you gotta grow up and let go of Santa, the Easter Bunny and squealing like little girls whilst playing with squirt guns every year.  Seriously.

First time in Pattaya Songkran enjoyed and ever since then 5 later , Now hate it with a passion!!!! Would be so nice if just a calm polite wet not a dangerous loud soaking . I have lost 3 good  people to the stupidity of this festival I think its developed out of control , Why cant it be done in one or 2 blocks where the idiots can be idiots 24 hrs if they like why disrupt other decent folk whom dont share the same idiosy. Love great tunes but man I can't get myself anywhere round the menotinous beat and horns sounding garbage they dance to.It is "Sh@##$$5!!!! Top it off with the your empty headed stupid mentality the looks and motions and drunkedness ,the deaths and you start to realize just how wired differently the people of this place really is . I am of the belief that this race of polluting self centered selfish and most of all STUPIDITY can never change for anything better and I am really saddened to say that . It cant change as the majority don't and no fault of their own have any education to know any better. But on the other side some folk enjoy the wild lawlessness side  and who cares if people die or get injured.

"don't and no fault of their own have any education to know any better." I'm with you although it appears 99% of those people looking to inflict harm or pain are farangs not Thais.  i pointed out a guy in front of me to my buddy that had just been hit in the ear with one of those high powered PVC guns.  He was bent over in pain holding his ear.  90% percent easily today aimed for the face and ears.  if I didn't have earplugs in it would have been a problem.  last Pattaya songkran for me

Maybe I don't dislike it because where I live in the village that does not happen, only when you go to the real trouble spots. Pattaya is not really Thailand its a big party town. You can expect more trouble there.

Here in the gated muh bahn no problems, if i go out maybe.. but nothing that comes close to Pattaya.. but then again people chose to live in a party town.

Party town? Do you live here? The "Entertainment" district is a very small part of Pattaya. The remainder is a non-party area, comprised of families and others who don't subscribe to the frivolities of the central, business core.

I been to Pattaya more then a few times, i live in BKK and have a car so its not that hard to get there. To say its not a party town full of tourist is an understatement. So when your in a tourist town it has its downsides. You can't have the upsides without the downsides when do people start to understand that.

Ill give you an example when I came to my area on the outskirts of BKK there was no traffic, but I had to travel far to find good shops. Now I got an Ikea, one of the biggest centrals and a BTS near me. Seems like a lot of upsides, downside is that there is a lot of traffic now.

Same goes for Pattaya, it has a lot to offer but with it come a lot of tourists and a lot of crazy locals. If you want total peace you should not live there.

22 hours ago, robblok said:

Point is you choose to live near a party town, that has many advantages, but also some disadvantages. Just live with it you can't have it all your way you will just have to adapt the locals surely won't. So you can complain.. be a GOM and so on or move or accept it.

Its a bit like here, before I had no big shopping centers now I got an IKEA and a big central. Great.. but it also means traffic.. now I could complain about the traffic but that is just a result of having more options. The same goes for you .. you live in a party town with many options. With those options a few downsides appear too. Can't have one without the other.

Actually I don't live near the party town any more, moved away 3 years ago but that doesn't change the problem those that do live near it experience every year.  10 days of mayhem is too much.  Also have experience of living with your traffic near Ikea and getting away from that has improved my health 100%!

Modern Songkran is a vile abomination of a once charming and traditional festival.

We weren't discussing the best place to live in Thailand, but Songkran, but seeing as you brought it up - I'd suggest your place is nicer for about 1 week a year - Songkran week.

That is only your opinion which doesn't count for much because you do not have the knowledge of what happens outside of the pits

Farangs have ruined Songkran.

Joke of the day as the lo-so Pattaya Thais give the shirtless tattooed tourists hefty competition for bad behavior during Songkran (as well as before and after).

I dislike it because my favorite massage girl works in the middle of a high soaking zone.

All the more reason to love Songkran when you could get that extra special massage while your clothes dry:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:
