Chao Phraya Boardwalk Plan Dead In The Water: Architects

BANGKOK — Opponents of a plan to pour concrete boardwalks along both sides of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok were celebrating a tentative win upon news the government had dropped the project.

 

Landscape architect Yossapon Boonsom, a founder of the group which spearheaded the opposition, welcomed word Thursday that the controversial plan was shelved, but said the situation is still “uncertain” and the group would continue to follow the issue until the project is formally called off.

"We will be constructing on one of the most valuable natural resources in the city," Dr Patarut Dardarananda, director-general of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's (BMA) public works department" (Nov. 2015)

But Yossapon knew better:

"Hugging the part of the waterfront selected for a pilot phase walkway and cycling path are: a brewery, the central bank, a police station, towering apartments and historic temples, as well as various hotels, bars and restaurants"

And for this up to 500 people would be relocated for the promenade.
