The number of vehicles seized from drunk drivers during this Songkran holiday period –16,288 – was a 100 per cent increase over the previous Songkran, National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and Army deputy spokeswoman Colonel Sirichan Ngathong told the press on Wednesday.

The NCPO and related authorities, from April 11-17, had identified 490,512 cases of drunk driving (280,631 motorcyclists and 208,881 motorists), down 38 per cent from the previous year, she said.

As many violators were slapped with fines and their driving licences confiscated, the officers also resorted to impounding 16,288 vehicles (11,768 motorcycles and 4,520 cars/trucks) from such drunk drivers. During the previous Songkran, 8,128 vehicles were impounded, she said.

490000 Drunk drivers and 16000 vehicles impounded. Ok the others were fined but what causes the vehicle to be impounded rather than just having a fine and confiscated driving licence. Is it just the whim of the arresting officer or is there some criteria?

If 490,512 drink drivers were arrested and charged, but only 16,288 vehicles impounded, what happened to the other 474,224 vehicles? Were the offenders allowed to go on their "merry" way after a small fine, as they were only a little over the limit? If so, this is outrageous! In UK if someone is breathalised and found to be over the limit, they are arrested and taken to the police station for further, more accurate tests, and if positive, the vehicle impounded, until such time as a sober, insured and licensed driver can collect it! Also, drink driving offences all go to court , and result in a minimum 12 months disqualification, plus heavy fines, community penalties and/or imprisonment. Laws and punishments are enforced! The result, less carnage on the roads.

Why waste time and money on placing these vehicles in pounds

With nearly 1/2 Million drink drivers ( down 38% from the previous year ) over a 7 day period, just put the vehicles in the crusher and ship them via Laemchabang to China
