Daily News have revealed that a six vehicle pile-up that smashed up a Defence Ministry van and two tourist police cars has resulted in only a 1,000 baht fine for the driver of a ten wheel truck.

 

The driver - Manot Suaylam, 29 - said his truck carrying frozen chicken suffered brake failure before plowing into vehicles waiting at some lights in Nakorn Pathom on March 20th.

 

 

The accident was high in the public eye because one of the ten people hopitalized was former national takraw player Seubsak Phanseub who is now a police lieutenant colonel attached to the Kanchanaburi force and is known affectionately as "Sergeant Joe".

 

He suffered head injuries but they were not deemed as serious.

 

In fact the Nakorn Pathom police investigating said that none of the injuries sustained was serious and consequently the truck driver was only fined 1,000 baht.

 

The police said that compensation is also forthcoming from the person that caused the accident. This is likely coming from the company that owns the truck.

 

They also added that the case was not formally concluded.

 

Pictures at the time showed the Defence Ministry van high up wedged between the two tourist police vehicles that were believed to be part of a convoy.

 

Thaivisa notes that Daily News are running a campaign to raise awareness about road safety issues and were clearly concerned about the apparent leniency shown in the case.

Oh My... .... Brake Failure yet again ??????

 

This is just getting silly...  Brake Failure is not the 'go to excuse' for falling asleep, driving too fast, rainy conditions and of course, poor driving and overheating the brakes. 

 

Its time these drivers were held accountable for the injuries and deaths they cause. Increasing penalties to both the drivers and the owners of these vehicles is the only answer. 

 

But first, those in positions of decision-making power need to be negatively impacted so that someone who can make an impact actually cares enough to attempt to make a difference.

Yes the vehicle needs to be impounded and tested by a certified trustworthy mechanic, (if such a person can be found.)  Everyone must be well sick of this lame excuse now.  Of course it could be caused by unmaintained brakes with worn out pads/linings etc; then railroad the owner!!!  Note that according to a resident of Patong (Phuket) most of the brake failures on the notorious Patong hill are now out-of-town trucks/busses whose brakes do not hold when they leave it too late to change down and stall on the hill.  Locals have apparently mostly learned to maintain brakes & change down early. Learning to double declutch might still be essential for anyone driving an older vehicle because those who cant are often too scared to change down.

The truck that caused the accident ran into a queue of cars from behind, it was not the one in the photo.

The story said that he was driving a chicken truck.

Knowing the road well he was only a couple of kilometers away from the chicken factory, so my guess is it was a mobile phone related accident, not break failure.

1,000 baht fine is still cheaper than brake pad check and replacements, also insurance coverage for everything else. That's the mentality here.

Get real Only in Britain can a HGV driver lose his job while not even at work. The first thing the police do in any accident involving a HGV driver even though it’s not his fault is his Tacho card.

If one of the braking systems components is the driver and the driver fails to apply the brakes, then it is a "brake failure", yes?

The answer is in the above quoted text.

If, as the driver of the 10 wheeler said, the "brakes failed", then, the dump  truck and trailer shown in the picture are not responsible for this accident. The 10 wheeled reefer truck carrying frozen chicken came from behind and is not visible in the photo. 

In this case, we definitely do not see the full picture...................
