LONDON (Reuters) - The leader of a faction in British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative party demanding a clean break from the European Union, has denied issuing an ultimatum after asking her to drop a proposal for a customs partnership with the bloc.

A document prepared by the European Research Group, which is chaired by Jacob Rees-Mogg, said it would be "impossible" for Britain to strike meaningful trade deals under a customs partnership.

"There is no question of there being an ultimatum, this is a paper that has been produced on a specific aspect of policy that would not work," Rees-Mogg told BBC radio.

May's Brexit sub-committee, which helps set the direction of policy on leaving the bloc, meets on Wednesday to discuss narrowing down the position on a future customs arrangement with the EU to one of two options.

A customs partnership is one of two proposed options that May's government has proposed on customs, and means Britain would continue to collect EU tariffs for goods which are headed for member states.

He’s on a mission, helping out his pals in the banks, the financial services industry and the beneficiaries of ’offshore trusts’

It’s an utter mystery that this Old Etonian, Oxford graduate headgefund managers and shining example of the UK’s ‘elite’ has convinced a guy who frequently harks back to his working class roots in Glasgow that he’s working on behalf of ‘the little guy’.

Doff your hat and tug your forelocks.
C/h...you always go on about what someone has/has not..and also my working class roots..you NEVER go on about what's in someone's heart..the way they see things and feel about things..particularily when they have lifelong friends " stuck " in the UK for one reason or another.

Rees-Mogg’s agenda is avoiding taxes on the hyper wealthy, removing workers rights and dismantling the regulation of banks and the financial services sector.

He relies on the support of cap doffers to this.

He’s not going to do anything for you or your fiends other than strip out welfare, healthcare and all other forms of social protection.

Open your eyes and ears, he’s a paid up signed up member of the Tory elite.

He’ll only look after the 0.25%.

Link to his agenda please

Here’s an example:

“The MP said standards that were 'good enough for India' could be good enough for the UK”

Yes, this is exactly the point!

On top of that, in order to compete with imports from countries with poor environmental, labour and husbandry standards, would cause our own standards to be driven down.

Great article, it shows what an incorrigible, supercilious, fool Jacob Rees Mogg actually is.

Rees-Mogg, champion of zero hour contracts, enemy of workers’ rights.... worshipped by cap doffers.

But of course he ticks all important boxes ‘Old Etonian, Oxford, Multimillionaire Hedge Fund Manager and he talks posh’.

The perfect patrician for the surfs to grovel to.

Not content to simply know their place, eager to show allegiance to their ‘rightful master’.... as he shafts them.... again!

Thank you for demonstrating the problem discussing anything with people who lack a logical point of view.

You weren't discussing anything. You were ranting rubbish again.

The UK world nominal  GDP ranking has hardly changed since 1960. (World Bank).

Mouth before mind as usual.

Jacob Rees-Mogg will be PM before Christmas IMHO, and lead this country to the right Brexit we voted for

What Brexit did we vote for? I don't recall too much detail being presented at the time, just Boris Johnson's big red bus of lies and guff about bendy bananas.

Not forgetting Project Fear's multiple prophecies of doom and disaster, of course. Or did you?

I'm astonished by the discrepancy between how indignant Brexiteers were about George Soros contributing to Brexit oppostion and how complacent they've been about Robert Mercer, the American hedge-fund billionair and right wing loon, and his pro-brexit contribution.

Not at all - regardless on where you stood on the principle of EU membership, you were bombarded with lies and misinformation. So to say that the Rees Mogg scenario is what the country voted for is patent nonsense - nobody had a clue what we were voting for. Every one of us was sold a pig in a poke by people who were putting their own self interests first.
