An accident waiting to happen - where is Bill Gates when you need him?

Thailand's infamous Hanging Wires are never far from the news.

After Microsoft's Bill Gates named and shamed the Thai government into action in 2016 the problem still persists.

Yesterday Thai Rath were called to Sri Racha where a local resident complained that the electrical authorities have refused to do anything despite five months of complaints.

Wirot Srisurayothin, 74, said that ten days ago a telephone engineer had come to take a brief look - then gone away again after "a brief feel of the wires".

The wires are dangling precariously outside Wirot's premises on Sukhumvit Road leading into Chonburi in Bang Phra sub-district.

Bill Gates famously shamed the Thai government in 2016 when his hanging wire holiday snaps went viral online.

Work has been done to bury some wires especially in places like Bangkok and Pattaya - but many remain an eyesore that residents and tourists feel are accidents waiting to happen.

Just the other week a female motorcyclist died when she was nearly beheaded when caught up in one.

i really wonder what these authorities do all day, do they have any clue about their jobs ? maybe this social pressure will result in some positive action

And is there any overall policy (covering all types of wires and cables) about installation?

Is there any policy about height requirement, etc.

Is there any policy about different types of wires / cables being installed together?

Is there are policy about having to remove redundant wires / cables?

If not then the senior management of all these companies / agencies are derelict in their management  responsibilities and should be punished for dereliction? This has been going on for many decades, perhaps the previous senior management people should also be punished or at least shamed.

Can anyone explain to me please, why the cable guys leave rolls of cable hanging from almost every pole.

They get paid by the metre and leave the whole lot from the drum at the site. It also helps if they have to splice and extend. You will also see lots of plastic splice boxes.
The vast majority of cable you see like this is Fibre Optic cable - no harm from electricity but as stated a danger hanging down on the roads for motorbikes and cycles.

Dear khun Wirot Srisurayothin don't hang your hopes regarding hanging wires to high. You live in a country where a 'government' delays elections despite complaints for four years...

After visiting Panthip Plaza and found all his copied programs for sale for peanuts he left the country and promised never to come back.

As an ex BT overhead cable engineer I would say that's a 10pt failure 5.5m minimum on road crossings 6.5 high load routes instant dismissal for audited height fails '

Load checks on poles non existent redundant cables never seam to be faulted or recovered  just string up more and end up with the current jungle.

TV news last evening showed a young lady whos foot had gone through a damaged and rusty pavement grating causing an ankle to knee hash in the calf requiring (what seemed to be) 20 odd sutures.

Next video of local authority supervisor directing workmen with metal saws and tack welder to repair it and other knackered gratings.

Keep your eyes open......

The rolls you see are fibre internet.

The reason they leave rolls is because fibre connections have to be welded, and to avoid that the welding machine has to be taken up the ladder, they weld it on the ground and then roll up the cable.

The cables you see in the OP picture are data transfer cables, so not PEA's business.

I was told very recently by an internet company technician that PEA will demand that all cables that don't belong to them are removed form the poles in the next 6 months.

Lol... Egat is committed to adopting international standards.... so yes, there are guidelines that should be followed, but are very obviously ignored for reasons we can all speculate on for two or three seconds... that’s plenty of time, right?

your last paragraph is correct... companies should have safety guidelines, endorsed and overseen by Egat to run even one wire.... failure here is negligence and a lack of duty of care. ( by the government authority and its contractors)

but... damned if you do, damned if you don’t.... if alternatively, the companies do have these policies ( as they should), then there is still a case of negligence and failure in duty of care.... imho, this is a more serious / significant case to answer to.

put simply... it’s fornicatingly pathetic and anotherful shameful side of Thailand.

Look at Vietnam , cities like Hanoi or Saigon. Much cleaner and not many wires . Thanks to the French I guess.

Thailand still think they know the answer to all problems and will not listen to the outside world.

Cha Cha we are in Thailand nothing is fast here! What do you think Mr. Gates can do about? The actual government is a problem solver...corruption is almost disappeared, Bangkok floating belong almost to the past, road carnage is not anymore and the criminality (Thai and Farangs) is over.
