There's a long way to go. I am afraid it is a part of life in Thailand and it is unlikely it will ever be laid bare. The vast majority of these crimes go unreported and even when known about stay within the family circle. Been said a thousand times before but people will hide anything to not lose face. While you have that as a factor and a culture of secrecy not much will ever change in the land of smoke and mirrors. Sad indeed! 3

But, for a country the size of Thailand with its population, it just seems to happen MORE here -- like something from the list of horribles that Lupatria made above seeming to come along almost every day. Just when you think it can't get any worse than it already is, along comes something like this case to remind you that it can and does get worse here, seemingly perpetually. I used to be shocked and surprised, but now it's just kind of expected. 2

KittenKong
He admitted guilt. Many people admit to things in Thailand, and not always voluntarily. Either way it makes no difference as I mentioned. People are innocent until found guilty in a court of law, regardless of what they may or may not admit to.

Has he been found guilty of anything yet in a court of law? A confession can be withdrawn or proved impossible. So maybe being able to hide his identity,(as you can in the west) is actually a step forward in the legal system.

Popular Post InfinityandBeyond
9 hours ago, KittenKong said: Quite right too. Your uncle leapt to a totally erroneous conclusion and acted like a simple thug. Violence is only permissible in self-defence, or in the immediate defence of others. Vigilantism is not acceptable in any civilised society. There are laws and police for that. "...in any civilised society." Herein lies the Achilles heel to your argument and circular reasoning. I agree, vigilantism demonstrates that a society is not civilised and lacks rule of law and order. And one (or an entire society for that matter) sinks to the lowest common denominator. I.e. they are no better than the original perpetrator. In addition, your statement that, "There are laws and police for that" says to me that you are not being realistic about the country you live in or are posting about. There are laws and police in Thailand. I will not argue that. But the extent to which the police selectively enforce the laws is debatable. Therefore, your argument is basically thus: in a civilised society with police and laws (that are properly enforced) vigilantism is abhorrent and unnecesesary and only serves to destroy law and order. I think no one would disagree. I certainly don't. Finally, going back to your statement "...in any civilised society" makes any argument against vigilantism moot if you are speaking about Thailand. Sadly, it is the law of the jungle that rules the day here. And I do not disagree with you about vigilantism if we were playing on home turf. But the rules if the game are significantly different here and we are playing as visitors on someone else's home ground. To illustrate my point I will provide 2 relevant amd personal examples (and I will be as short as possible and spare the sordid details): 1) Our neighbour recently quit her job to be home with her physically and mentally handicapped daughter. Why? The daughter just reached puberty. And the mother does not trust the unemployed, unsavoury, cock-fighting, gambling, lao khao creeps that live next door and are related (as illustrated by today's sad news). 2) Another neighbour was having an incestuous relationship with his 14 yr old daughter, so Yai (grandma) called a "trusted" uncle to take her in. Where she was abused further. The young girl then went to stay with the village head man until the cops showed up in the a.m. Last I heard, the poor girl is back with dad helping him in another province on a construction worksite with dad's new wife. We are not in Kansas anymore, Toto. There is some freaky stuff that goes on here and it seems nothing is done about it. And it is heartbreaking at times. That is why I believe there are so many calls for vigilantism by foreigners on this forum in cases like this. Posters feel frustrated by the feeble and corrupt law enforcement and (in)justice system here and the attitude of the perps (i.e. acting as if it is only wrong if caught). The posters IMHO are not rallying a lynch mob. Just vocalizing their outrage at the seemingly complete lawlessness and lack of what some would consider basic social mores. Sorry to all for long post.
