I find the country, the landscape, the people, and Vientienne nightlife charming. In fact, I prefer Vientienne to any city in Thailand.

You heard waaaay wrong.

There are some great beer bars frequented mainly by the locals around the old town, some with live music, for an enjoyable evening out.

"I prefer Vientienne to any city in Thailand"  That's fine, but what about the incompetent people who run Laos?

On the road where the Avalon hotel is , if you keep going straight down that road , there is a 7/11 style kind of shop and they sell beer until way past sunset .

Theres four seats outside and theres usually one seat available , with the other three seats taken by some ex-pats

The guy who owns the 7 Eleven style shop is a foreigner, I think from Belgium and there for ages.

There's a nice and huge pub with live music and plenty of Lao people sit there and order a whole box of Lao beer. A nice place to sit for many hours, many eye candies and cheap and cold beer.

No worries, there'll soon be a Vientiane guzzi member.

I buy a years supply of Lao coffee there, as it's no longer available in Thailand as far as I know. Used to be in Tesco or Big C and in 7-11, but no longer. They have a stand at Don Muang airport selling it at double price, but I don't know of anywhere else.

Bummer, nobody told me.

When I was in Saigon last month the waitress from my local restaurant insisted on coming back to my hotel in the afternoon for a chat. When she walked in with me, she handed her ID papers to the desk as she walked past, they put them in a drawer, not a word was spoken. Almost every day I was approached by local ladies, sitting in September Park reading a book, sitting in Highlands coffee eating a baguette, I was totally amazed that there were so many girls floating around, and that they were so blatant about it. Not to mention the bars were packed with scantily clad women. Did I say, Saigon green beer in a bar 50c for a 450ml bottle.

Never been anywhere in the world where I was hit on so often, probably all the women were legit, and it was me being really hansum causing the problem.

I think it only becomes an issue if the VN girl stays overnight, i think it's a 9pm curfew.....but i may be wrong.

The rules on the hotel wall said, in English

"Visitors after 10pm not registered as guests (or family members of guests) must leave ID with the front desk."

Called a joiner fee. To cover the hotel because in their eyes you have paid for an extra room for your guest. Usually about half the cost of the hotel and they dont actually give u another room key. Used to only be a handful of hotels do it. Not sure what its like now

I usually stay at the Avalon hotel, about 1 km from the consulate.
Nice little restaurant attached to it, nothing amazing but clean food at least (stay away from burgers though)
You might want to ask for a room not close to the lift, as it might be a nuisance if you're a light sleeper.

Hoong Thong hotel is also quite nice, but make sure you get one of the new rooms, I think they are in the B Wing, cost a bit more, but totally worth it.

Next to this hotel, nice restaurants, along Mekong, a night club just in front. Used to be close to the old consulate, not anymore. Now like 3 kms away from the new one

Dao Savanh hotel, one of the best hotels in town, but bit more expensive.

Are all of these hotels guest friendly?

Never tried, couldn't say ?
Been told that guys who find somebody, do "their business" at this somebody's place, not at their hotel.
There must be reason why ?

Would somewhere on the Cambodian border from Surin be a better option? More nightlife...More girls. Do they have the same restrictive laws as Laos re "girlfriends"

What about hotels Savannakhet? Avalon looks ok but maybe to far from town centre?

Avalon not that far from center, I always stay there.
It's a 5-7 mn tuk-tuk ride to the night market, or restaurants like "Chez Boune".

Guys, guys, you're getting off topic....

How to cheat on your wife with a prostitute while getting a multi-entry marriage visa in Savannakhet.

And then the guys wonder why their Thai Wife left them and took them for everything they could

Do not go to Boune, she serves bad food from the day before, many people have been sick.

Well Ive hade my 2 days in Savannakhet and yes its very slow. There is a scene here if you know where to go. Some excellent food around. One of my favourite places here a little bar called Heavens gate. Dennis the owner lovely guy as are the small group of expats who go there. Excellent food and super cold Beer Laos. Would I come here again purely for a holiday? Probably not. Long drive and visa / re entry fees make it expensive before I even got here. If I was doing a visa run and was close Id come here for sure. I can see why expats would enjoy living here once u got the lay of the land

I've stayed at the 2 big hotels and the Casino, wouldn't stay at any of them ever again, Now I always stay at the Vavanouk guest house (expat/Laos owned), good, clean place.
