Wichit Police have been notified about an accident at 4:40pm yesterday (May 15) on Chao Fa–Suanluang Road, opposite a furniture mall near Naka Jor Su Kong Shrine in Wichit.

That is quite old to ride a m/c where I live - more like 9 years or 10 - and normally with their parents blessing.

Sad, yes.

But just "another case".

Up here in the sticks it happens and will just not be in the news.

No way that this lawless insanity will stop during my lifetime.

Says it all .....

"Aphisit Konlee, also 12, told police that he and Chinnarat were riding on a motorbike from Saphan Hin. Chinnarat was operating the motorbike, while Aphisit rode pillion. Both were not wearing a helmets.

Three other youths all on one other motorbike had pulled alongside and the drivers of the two motorbikes started speeding, Aphisit said."

As much as I like to criticize, consider that in a family where both parents must work, or there is a single parent, there is no other way of getting the child to school. It's not right, but I can understand why a kid would take a motorbike to school.  I rode my bike to school starting at age 8 and had to navigate some heavy traffic and did not wear a bike helmet.

I would rather my 12 year old child stayed off school than ride a motor bike to school, with or without a helmet.

I can't believe there would be no way for the child to get to school.  Neighbours with children could share times to take the kids.  There are song taews, busses, taxies, friends, relatives, neighbours, and even walk / pushbike.

There probably were alternatives, but given the widely used, socially acceptable and un-enforced easier solution of letting children ride motorcycles then children dying in accidents is an inevitably...

It's tragic, but it's par for the course... But, even those overloaded school-bus-songthaews are dangerous, so what are the alternatives? Kids riding pillion with an adult riding... But the adults are only marginally safer.

That doest make it safe...

Many of Thaivisa 'twighlight years' posters grew up without seatbelts, child car seats, without bike helmets, played in the forest with airpistols..etc etc and they'll all claim they were/are fine...

Who can't claim they are fine are those silent voices of those who unnecessaryily died, became permanently incapacitated, or who's life was simply changed to such a degree that visiting Thailand was never an option (hence no voice on a forum such as this)....

Since I was a child, schools were either walkable along a footpath or free transport was provided (UK). Of course, this can't be compared to Thailand...

But just because the safety knowledge was absent in our home countries when we were young does not mean It should be ignored in light of obvious risk today.

I get sick and tired of kids racing round on motorbikes to the complete indifference of the police. They are a danger to themselves and others. It's a situation that is out of control on the island.

I feel sorry for the driver of the car, who should not have been put in this position in the first place.

There's a huge difference between a pedal bike and racing about on motorbikes in order to get big 'face' with one's mates.

No doubt they were going hammer and tongs down the road racing their mates, correct me if i am wrong but i thought 15 was the legal age to ride a motorbike. I remember one day coming back from Phetchabun,we reached a town called Nong Pai,roughly half way to home, school was finishing and a veritable flood of students came out on motorbikes,a cop was there stopping traffic, barely a helmet to be seen and many kids were under 15,or looked it,the cop did nothing,as the kids would not have any money he could get .

not a bad idea..and the police should be charged with negligence....this is just absolutely sad and the bottom line is it will happen many more times again because this country considers this kind of thing as the norm and just doesn't give a shit

...and an awful lot of parents who'll never grow up!

I looked all around my house but could not find any <deleted>'s i could give.

The kids were speeding, didn't have helmets, were too young to drive, and had no licenses.

Those 4 boys still alive hopefully learned something, and to the parents who lost their son I would recommend to do some soul searching to find out where it all went wrong.

Only sorry for the bus driver who now has to live with having a kids head crushed under his wheels (assuming he was driving normally).

I have asked myself the very same question. And I come to the answer, "They know no better." This is because this is what the majority of families do in their village.

So the answer to your question is yes but not in a wilful way but the irresponsibility and stupidity is cultural rather than specific.

The solution is strong moral leadership with enforced traffic laws. As the last century of Thailand's history has amply demonstrated these are most obviously lacking without any period of exception.

RIP the Kid at 12 in Thailand they are too dumb to know what is right from wrong.

Lock up the Parents because they are even dumber and have not taught their Child right from wrong, even though they do know the difference !

of course there is another way! as a responsible adult the parent/s should arrange for a responsible adult to take the child to school on their bike and ensure the child wears all necessary safely equipment/clothing.

or the parents get together with other parents and arrange suitably safe transport for their children to school.

Unbelievable - All these posters saying it is quite understandable given certain circumstances!!!

He probably has been ridding since he was 7 and the odds finally caught up with him.
