Rotten dolphin carcass washes up on Samui beach

By The Nation

The rotten carcass of an endangered Irrawaddy dolphin was discovered on a Samui beach on Saturday morning.

Local villagers informed the Samui police station after finding the carcass on Lipa Noi beach in Tambon Lipa Noi.

The dolphin was about two metres long, weighed about 80 kilograms and had a big wound on its back.

Police informed the Samui fishery officials of the finding so they could investigate before burying the carcass.

"Irrawaddy" dolphins ?  The species found at the burmese rivermouth ? Aren't they a sweetwater species?

A little bit further south from Ko Samui there is Khanom Beach.  All along the waterfront one can rent boats to go out for dolphin watching.  They are rather numerous & familar to this area.  Wouldn't take a dolphin very long to swim from there a few miles up north

an "Irrawadyy" dolphin would have to swim all the way from the Irrawaddy River to Singapore before it entered the Gulf of Thailand
