BANGKOK, 4 June 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has launched a tax intensive measure to promote foreign film making in Thailand.

A tax rebate equal to 15 percent of every 50 million baht spent on the filming locally will be offered.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Khowsurat disclosed that the incentive will help boost the country’s revenue from being used as a location for film making and the production of documentaries and reality shows.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has also assigned the Department of Tourism to attract more foreign film producers to Thailand to generate revenue and reputation for the country.

What a great idea - but please get your act in order first.

I remember vividly the discussion 20 years ago, when Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat were to star in a movie. The script, rejected by the Thai censor board, got rewritten a few times until the producers called it a day and moved the entire project to Malaysia, where millions of dollars were spent by going ahead with the original script.

It might be time that also certain other government agencies inch towards the 21st century to get this idea flying. Legally speaking any band, artist, musician "working" here requires a work permit by the Labour Department - irrespective of pay or not.

The (Swiss) General Manager of the Montien Hotel in Bangkok, years ago, brought in a folklore band to do the yodeling and the works.
They could not get the work permits but a stern warning by the Labour Department on what would happen if the band would play - which resulted in the band sitting idle nightly at the Swiss buffet. The Montien never ever had a folklore or cultural event ever again!
