webfact
Country shocked as rejected men resort to murder By THE NATION TWO SEPARATE cases in which young Thai men failed to get the reconciliations they desired, and then fatally shot their ex-girlfriends before turning the guns on themselves, have left Thai society perplexed and worried about youths’ response nowadays in the wake of rejection. The two tragedies ended with the deaths of two young women and one perpetrator, while the other remained in a coma as of press time. Dr Apichat Jariyavilasa, a psychiatrist and spokesman for the Department of Mental Health, said such cases of assault and killing of former partners could stem from various factors, including a person’s immature character or violence-prone upbringing, a heat-of-the-moment reaction when hurtful words are exchanged or narcotic/alcohol abuse. He urged people suffering heartbreak or severe disappointment to the point of it affecting their health, causing insomnia or suicidal thoughts, to seek a psychiatrist’s help or call the department’s hotline 1323. The popular Facebook-based community page “Drama Addict” says there have been far too many news reports of Thai men killing their ex-girlfriends who refused to reconcile. Besides being a horrifying indication that many young men are unable to cope maturely with rejection, the Facebook page said even more disturbing was the tone used by many other men’s comments on such stories in order to justify such violence. “It makes me wonder what has caused many Thai youths to turn out this way,” said the page administrators. “What did we miss? Did we give up teaching children about being a gentleman or respecting the opposite sex? What can we do to solve this horrible value?" In one incident at Nakhon Pathom’s Salaya district, 25-year-old Phakkapong Jittarom killed his 21-year-old university student ex-girlfriend Natchariya Thaprajit outside her apartment on Monday after she rejected his offers to get back with him. Phakkapong initially survived a suicide gunshot in the neck but died that night at Nakhon Pathom Centre Hospital. The horrific incident was captured in a CCTV footage, which showed Phakkapong shooting his ex-partner in the head before sitting next to her body and shooting himself in the neck. Natchariya’s grieving mother and relatives from Surin collected the body from the morgue and described the young woman as being the family's hope and pride; a good and hard-working student with a bright future ahead of her. Natchariya’s mother Jirapinya Inthasen, trying her utmost to hold back her tears, said she forgave all those involved and only wished that her daughter's spirit be at peace. Phakkapong's parents went to the police to offer information about their son and later collected their son's body, a police source said. The other incident occurred in Bangkok’s Min Buri district at 8.30am on Monday, when Kannaporn Pongchai-in, 18, allegedly shot his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend Sornsawan Chalardthanyakit and turned the gun on himself at the clothes shop she worked at in the New Min Buri Market on Soi Plathong 7. Sornsawan, who sustained a gunshot wound in her chest was pronounced dead yesterday morning and Kannaporn, who reportedly shot her after she turned down his latest request to reunite with her, remains in a coma. Popular Post Samui Bodoh
While one should avoid overly simplistic answers to a serious problem, I can't help but say that Thai men often are reared with an attitude that they can do no wrong and that 'Face' matters more than anything else. Further, Thai society doesn't seem to place a great deal of emphasis on 'rights and wrongs'; can anyone outline the Thai equivalent of a personal moral code or the Thai equivalent of personal responsibility? When young Thai men seek a role model, perhaps they see Prayut (and other leaders) who simply took/did what they wanted by bypassing all norms and proper behaviour? And, perhaps more importantly, get away with it? How does Thai society treat women? Are they valued as equals with all the same rights and privileges? Or, are they seen as a prize and something to own? In light of the above, are we surprised that there are incidents like this? You can't draw firm conclusions from one or two incidents, but I suspect that we will see even more of this kind of behaviour in the future. It is terribly sad to see young lives snuffed out before seeing them reach their potential. Popular Post Dexlowe
Thirty years ago there didn't seem to be quite as many incidents of lethal violence as we're seeing now. The reason can't be simply put down to the growth of internet communications which has offered better reporting, because back then newspapers could afford widespread networks of contacts, correspondents and stringers who penetrated every corner of the country. Perhaps one explanation could be found in the growth of materialism and availability of consumer goods. I believe that the irresponsible parenting problem has always been there, but that with more distractions these days, there's been a diminishing of normal societal controls. I think the problems running rampant through the monkhood these days could be indicative of that, or a consequence. Whatever. (Just a few thoughts on the matter - take them as you will.) 10
Popular Post kannot
What can you do??? stop being so bloody LAZY, simple as that, parenting takes a HUGE amount of effort and work, it does not mean sticking Somchai in front of a screen. 15 7
Popular Post jaltsc
"...person’s immature character or violence-prone upbringing..." No, not individual cases of character or upbringing. It's the national culture whereby males are conditioned from birth to believe and act as though they are privileged and entitled. Then, when they become of adult age and are faced with the reality of rejection, their only response is to act like the spoiled brats they have been raised to be. When tantrums, which worked as a child, to get what they want, doesn't obtain the desired outcomes now, they up the ante with violence. Basically, these men are spoiled children in adult bodies. Popular Post canuckamuck
Steady diet of domestic violence on Thai soaps. Violence against women is made to seem normal and common. And an overall lack of morality, The boys in orange are in the headlines for crime more than the girlfriend shooters. 14

Popular Post z42
You also have to look at the soaps and music videos. Rejection is almost exclusively met with a desire or acting out of violent vengeance. Thai lads in my experience are either incredibly decent or complete nuggets. Very few tread the grey between sadly 10

Popular Post stanleycoin
Direct result of fantastic parenting and the superb education system in Thailand. Spare the rod and spoil the child. Be careful they may grow up, to be selfish killers, because they cant have what they want, when they want, with whom they want and how they want. Selfishness runs deep under the thin veneer, in Thailand. R.I.P to the young girls. Edited June 6, 2018 by stanleycoin

Popular Post Nowisee
Senseless and tragic. A lot of good replies here. Many thoughts on this. Many ingredients to make this happen. Education, parenting, culture, beliefs, societal norms, roll models, tv, too much of this, too much of that, lack of this, lack of that, blah blah blah. I suspect it will become more common than it will stop... same like spree killings in farangland. The world is going through a evolutionary change... people are losing their minds and becoming violent and they think it's ok to do this.
Popular Post quandow
“What did we miss? Did we give up teaching children about being a gentleman or respecting the opposite sex? What can we do to solve this horrible value?" I've said this before, I'll say it again - Thai students are not given enough free time to develop proper social skills. I left a home room position, and one of the major reasons: I was demanded to keep the students still in their desks all day long including "recess" and lunch. The students had to sit quietly in an orderly fashion for nine hours a day, five days a week. ZERO tolerance for free time. I used to have a Friday afternoon arts and crafts fun time to end the week on a happy note - THAT was shot down in a very mean-spirited manner. These were 7 and 8 year old kids - they are bundles of energy needing constant motion to burn it off. THINK about it - students are at school the better part of their developing lives. If they aren't given the time and freedom to learn how to react to each other, then when they ARE old enough to get a gun to solve problems, it will seem appropriate to them. Popular Post outsider
"... Thai society perplexed and worried about youths’ response..." Youth??? I don't think any one particular age group can be stigmatised for this behaviour. If news reports are anything to go by, men (and even women) young and old seems to think that this (killing the ex and sometimes killing themselves as well) is 'the norm'. All due in most parts to a general immaturity amongst the Thai society (which gives rise to loss-of-face), in my opinion. As for being shocked, nothing has shocked me since the 'dancing man' video (one who shot his ex, ex's mother in plain sight of onlookers, then sauntering out like nothing happened). Not sure why the 'country' is shocked now, when all this have been happening on a quite regular basis. Edited June 6, 2018 by outsider 5

Popular Post gbswales
The first thing they can do is to ban private gun ownership - anyone found with a gun gets automatic 10 year sentence whether they used it or not - obviously an amnesty period first to hand them all in for destruction. People should only be allowed to use guns which are used and stored at a recognised shooting club. The problem with guns is that there is no physical contact which leaves the perpetrator feeling remote - until he realises too late what he has done.
