NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor Robert de Niro issued an expletive-laden denunciation of U.S. President Donald Trump during the live television broadcast of the Tony Awards ceremony on Sunday.

De Niro appeared on stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall to introduce rocker and Tony Awards performer Bruce Springsteen.

“I’m gonna say one thing. Fuck Trump,” De Niro said, without any preamble.

With the audience of theater actors, directors and producers shrieking and rising to their feet in applause, De Niro said: “It’s no longer down with Trump. It’s fuck Trump.”

He did not elaborate on his comment and switched immediately to a prepared introduction of Springsteen.

The expletive, known as the F-bomb, was bleeped by the CBS network for millions of television watchers at home, a CBS spokeswoman said. However, it was heard by those in the audience and journalists covering the awards show, which honors the best of Broadway theater.

De Niro is one of the most respected actors in the United States with two Oscar wins for “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather: Part II.”

The White House did not immediately return a request for comment. CBS also did not return a request for further comment.

De Niro, a noted liberal, has been increasingly critical of Trump, a Republican, at smaller showbusiness events, but none have the high profile and audience of the Tony Awards.

The Tony Awards show was seen by some six million Americans last year.

Whack this wise guy he's a snipers dream.

Are you suggesting the  killing/murder of  an admired actor because you don't agree with his political views?

I hope you delete your  post.   Not good to have it on your record.

If you had a reasonable understanding of English, you would  fully grasp the meaning of your post to this thread.

If you were referring to  the film "Good Fellas" your post was cryptic  at best.

An apt sentiment towards the current most horrible potus but such theatrics do jack sheit towards actuality reining in his power. Just a feel good moment for the majority of Americans and global people as well that get how disgusting and dangerous "trump" is.

What a douchebag this man is.. he is AN ACTOR for fluk sake, an actor, and to stand there flex muscles and mock and ridicule your president using filthy language was until now reserved for comedians only, now De Niro sees fit to stoop so low and curse the man how is trying to do good albeit in an unorthodox way doesn't say much for this ACTOR, what did he ever do to better humanity i ask to have the rights to mock others?....

the sheep will only sit up and listen, if it was Morgan Freeman (for he's been Pres' twice over ?  )

Am I missing something here? Does Tiny Don deserve our respect, simply because he occupies the office, despite who he is, what he does and says, and any other factor? I was taught that respect was earned, and not freely given. Your boy is the one who uses filthy language, such as grabbing them by the pussy, and your boy stoops low every day, by insulting our allies, while he praises our enemies. DeNiro has done more in one year to better humanity that Trump has done in his entire career. Trump may be the least charitable "man" to ever occupy that office, except perhaps Nixon.

DeNiro is known to support the following charities. Can you name even one, that Trump supports? Just one. He is known to be one of the stingiest wealthy men in the US. With the Tribeca Film Festival alone, he does more to lift up mankind than Trump has ever done in his lifetime, including his feeble presidency. Get a life please. Knocking Hollywood is so passe. Stop reading the daily bulletin from the White House. It might enable some independent thinking on your part.
