Is a Schengen Visa required for France if wife has a Valid UK visa

Featured Replies

My wife is due to apply for her second UK visitor visa where we hope to travel to the UK towards the end of the year.

We also plan to travel to France either before or after visiting the UK to take the son to Disney Paris.

Question is does my wife need to apply for a Schengen Visa and supply all the documentation similar to UK visa application? I have read that she may be entitled to a free Schengen Visa with minimum documentation based on having a UK Visa and traveling with me.

Anybody have advice on this question

She will need to apply for a schengen visa as the uk is not in the schengen treaty

The good news is that while the uk is in the eu its actually easier to apply for a schengen visa than it is to apply for a uk visa as she can apply as the spouse of an eu citizen

The documentation requirements are less and the cost is less than a uk visa

See the Schengen sticky near the top of the forum. But the answer is yes.

In broad terms UK and Schengen visas are not that different. But since EU law applies here you will be able to go through the minimal hassle & paperwork channel: any non European who is family (by marriage and such) of a EU/EEA national and who are traveling together or will join eachother in an OTHER EU/EEA state is entitled to an expidited procedure with minimal paperwork. Her having a UK visa or not has nothing to do with it.

So since this concerns a Thai + Briton married couple, visiting France, EU directive 2004/38 applies here.
