ADHD diagnosis in Bangkok. Doctors?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a doctor in Bangkok who can properly diagnose adult ADHD?

I am from south america, recently moved to bangkok. Back in my country doctors are quick to diagnose ADHD and hand out meds like candy. I don't want to waste my time again with a superficial assessment and let alone take stimulants based on a questionnaire and a brief interview.

I've always had moderate symptoms of ADD, even failed the TOVA test (scored -12), but refused to take meds as I was doing just fine with my life. However, over the past 8 months these symptoms have been worsening and I want to know if the root cause could be an anxiety disorder or depression and not ADHD.

Any help is much appreciated

Just don't mention the word 'ADHD' and see what happens?

My experience is that Thai doctors are quick to agree with your own assessment and will indeed prescribe medicine as if its candy.

Not ADHD meds, they don't.

And if I read OP correctly he is looking for a thoughful, thorough professional diagnosis, not medication for a self diagnosis.

Having some degree of ADHD does not rule out also having anxiety or being depressed. It is not likely ADHD will have worsened in the past 8 months so more likely that there is some anxiety or depression.

I suggest you see a therapist counselor here:

S/he will refer you to a pyschiatrist if they think medication is indicated, once they have had enough time to get a sense of your situation.

I have ADD and a firm grasp of comorbidity, believe me... ?

And in my experience Thai doctors will prescribe hardcore medicine; Ritalin, heavy painkillers, benzos as if it's nothing.

If OP is worried about being diagnosed with ADHD too swiftly and too easily then it's perhaps wise to not mention it too quickly. It may result in the doctor digging a little deeper to find out the root cause of OP's issues.

thanks for the responses. I agree that not mentioning ADHD to the doctor may yield better results.

They won't give you hardcore painkillers anymore and even  strong benzos are harder to get than they used to be

.................Ritalin or Adderall (amphetamine) can only be prescribed by a Hospital Doctor and only dispensed from a Hospital Pharmacy.

But anyway if I was going to see a Psychiatrist in BKK it would be this one https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Pichai-Saengcharnchai

- but note His speciality is addiction not ADHD. He has been involved with Alcoholics Anonymous in Thailand and a cynical clued up friend who saw him for Bipolar described him as "a compassionate man".

Note: He practices at Bumrungrad (The place that uncoincidentally IMO has a building in the shape of a cash register )but also did maybe still does practice also at the military hospital Pra Mongkut Khlao and I believe had/maybe still has a surgery in a district of Bangkok where I am told he makes his expertise available at normal i.e common people not His So Thai Doctor prices.

The place that I recommended are psychologists not pyschiatrists so they do not prescribe drugs. They will refer you to a psychiatrist if, once they have a feel for your needs, they think medication is indicated and the psychiatrist will give heavy weight to the referring psychologist's recommendation and diagnosis...wisely so since the psychologist will have spent hours with the patient while the psychiatrist will have just minutes.

This place offers therapy and overall psych assessments. You do not need to withold info on prior ADHD dx for fear of being medicated.

Even with people who clearly need medivation I usually suggest starting with a therapist as that is more likely to yield a correct diagnosis.
