Can a titanium pin implant leak?

Featured Replies

Over 10 yrs ago I had a titanium pin implanted in my face in Bumrungrad after an accident. Is there any chance that this can breakdown and cause neuro /health issues?

Is it possible to have toxicity/ metals tested in ones blood. If so where in bkk can I get this done?

thanks

Titanium has been used in dentistry for more than 70 years and in orthopedic surgery for about 60, millions of procedures. One of the main reasons it is used is its high biocompatibility, as well as its strength and ability to bond with bone. Titanium  is not a poison and the human body can tolerate large doses of it. It does not normally "leak" per se and sma llincreases in titanium levels in the human biody have not been linked to any adverse outcomes.

Be wary of various quack sites saying otherwise.

However it is possible to be allergic to just about anything and there are some people - very few - who have an allergy to titanium and may develop hypersensitivity reaction to it. This will be evident within a comparatively short time of implant, not  10 years later.

Whatever healht issues you are now experiencing are very unlikley to be due to the implant.
