Thank you in advance for answering my question.  I have a new Extension of stay based on retirement.  I want to arrive in BKK on a one way flight ticket.  No return flight booked at this time.  Am I required to have in my possession at the time I arrive in BKK a paid  return flight ticket?

My experience is it is the airlines in your home country who will ask you this.

If they give you a problem ask for a supervisor and tell them you are going to live and retire in Thailand.

I have never been asked about this by Thai IO with an extension of stay.

A return or onward ticket is not required if you have a valid visa or re-entry permit for entry to the country. In your case it is your re-entry permit that will allow you an entry up to the date your extension ends.

If questioned point out that you have a re-entry permit and if that is not enough ask for a supervisor.

No.

Immigration at BKK will not ask for, or have any interest in, a return ticket.

On this, there is an easy fix.

I use to do this before I moved here and had no idea when I was going back to my home country.

Just book a flight on an airline that has a 24 hour cancellation policy.  United is one.

Make and print out the online booking, then cancel the flight.

If they ask for it at the airport, show it to them.  They never wasted time to check or research it.

Depends on which is your home country, I think. I can certainly recall reports on here of this being problematical at USA airports - although, admittedly, none recently. Myself I have never encountered such problems when returning from annual trips to Europe from either CDG (Paris) or LHR (London) with my current retirement extension plus re-entry permit - most recently the day before yesterday!

One way ticket is fine.

Be prepared to be persistent if challenged when boarding.

You are definitely in the right not having a return ticket.

Don't bother with buying such a ticket out.

You will not have a problem entering Thailand.

However, as you say you have a retirement extension and not a current O-A visa, you MUST have a reentry permit obtained in Thailand before you left Thailand to retain that extension upon return.

If you left Thailand without that reentry permit, forget about it, your retirement extension would now be DEAD.

i'm on an extension of stay with a multi reentry permit.  i typically buy tickets BKK-USA-BKK, so i never have a ticket leaving thailand when i am returning to thailand (the USA-BKK portion of my ticket).  in the last 12 months, i had to show my re-entry permit in seattle, los angeles, and honolulu.  three different airlines, asiana, cathay pacfic, and korean.  no problems with any of them, showed them the reentry permit and got the boarding pass.
