Good + Cheap Sealed Bottom Bracket as Replacement for Cups + Balls + Axle-with-Cones for Type - Folding ; Brand - Dahon ; Model - Route 2.0 ?

Dear Fellow Thaivisa.com Posters,

I am considering buying a new bicycle ;

Type ; Folding

Brand ; Dahon

Model ; Route 2.0

Gears ; Rear ONLY [ Sprockets + Derailliar ]

I notice that the Bottom Bracket Assembly is a basic type

vis.

Cups + Balls / Caged Balls + Axle-with-integral-Cones

I think it wise to change the Bottom Bracket Assembly to being a Sealed one

I do not know which type to select anyway from what I presume is a challenging choice.

Furthermore, the Shop says that to accomplish this will cost THB 4,000 approx ;

Because, they explain,- it would involve replacing the Chainwheel & matching Crank ;

They said that I would be changing the total Crankcase ;

i.e.

Bottom Bracket + Chainwheel + matching Crank

I am cynical about that verdict.

Can I replace the Bottom Bracket Assembly with a "Sealed" Bottom Bracket ONLY AND yet successfully & easily have existing Chainwheel + matching Crank connect, & function thereon ?

Thanking u all in advance for all ur helpful relevant replies.

Regards,

When I had a bottom bracket problem on my mountain bike I had to replace the entire crankset.  Probably determined by the spare parts that the shop carries.  You might be cheaper buying a second-hand bike to cannibalise

Firstly: you're on your own, I take no responsibility as BB standards are a nightmare. !!?

I'm guessing that the Dahon has a square taper 68mm standard 'english' BB. The benefit of the cup and cone is that it is rebuildable, but of course a bit more maintenance intensive. That said, you can easily source a same spec, square tapered cartridge BB which would be compatible with the crankset. Only if you want to go hollowtech or similar would you need to change out the BB and crankset together.

I'd run the standard BB until it needs a rebuild, and decide then.
