Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned - source close to Davis

Featured Replies

I suspect Davis can’t believe he’s had the good fortune to be handed an excuse to extricate himself from this mess.

He’s not banging on about ‘the will of the people’ he’s bending to the will of a weak PM.

He’s doing a runner!

IMHO Though I don't like May, she has taken one of the very few possible sensible routes out of the impasse.

firstly  ...The reputable international economic forums (Forget sad jokes like "Economists for Brexit") essentially agree that we will loose at least 3% of our GDP if we dump our trading relationship with the EU. That is big big money, and the social structure of our country will be seriously damaged. If you really care about the future of the UK - and however much you hate the EU - then you will wake up to the fact that you can't eat sovereignty.

secondly.... The Irish border problem -  for which no hard Brexiter has offered a solution - if not addressed is very likely to lead to the break up of the UK.

May has enough intelligence to realise these, and many other associated problems, and has done her best in a near impossible situation.

The biggest laugh of all is reserved for the millions of voters who actually imagined that it would all be easy, just like they were told.

I remember when Britain joined the EC and stabbed New Zealand in the back. Karma is sweet.

Excellent news. Surely it can't be long now before that awful woman is given the order of the boot.

By who?

One thing is for sure, something has to give.  May's latest proposals fail everyone.

Something has just ‘given’

Davis has thrown the towel in.

Will be interesting now we have a real Brexiteer fronting negotiations.

???

Since when did the real Brexit negotiator, Olly Robbins become a Brexiteer ?

Last month it emerged Davis had spent just four hours with Barnier so far this year. The only time anyone ever really remembered he was in the job was when he threatened to leave it. He has now finally done so and followed through.

Only 4 hours this year?
I can not believe that the Chef Brexit negotiator spoke only 4 hours with the main negotiator from the other side.

That sounds like refusal to work and sabotage.

It could just be he didn't have anything to say.

One thing missing noticeably from his resignation letter was an alternate plan to May's.

A negotiator has to have something to negotiate.  Davis never did.  Just a list of red lines and wishful thinking from May.

If we do end up with a Brexit in name over then it will be an unmitigated disaster for the remainers as well as the Brexiteers.  It will be the worst outcome for Britain to still be subject to all the EU rules, have to hand over billions of pounds and have no voice whatsoever.

This is what remainers have been after the whole time.

The UK under the thumb of Brussels, under the jurisdiction of the ECJ and to keep the pumping money to Brussels.

The Remain campaign explained this scenario - Brexiteers filed it under ‘Project Fear’.

You see that is the problem with the blinkered.  The vast majority of people I actually know are remainers and they are appalled at what May is proposing.  The last thing they want is a Brexit in name only.  This is going to be bloody and brutal and it is about damage limitation.  The government needs to negotiate something positive and they are clearly incapable of doing that as of today.  Brexit is going to be costly so we must try to get something from it.  To say that BINO is what remainers want is just naïve beyond belief!

Sure.

Read the comments from the remainers Bible

Wont take you long, there is only about 14,500 comments.

Then come back and tell me about beyond belief.

Beyond belief to believe that the Guardian offers a balanced argument.  Is that where you get your insights?  Yes, beyond belief.

Markets are up.

Sterling is up. David Davis in the bin. Hopefully we will get a negotiator who makes some effort to do his job and isn't just a lazy so-and-so. Goodbye to the deadbeat waffler.

Some effort to do his job as what? Chief Appeaser? Davis was never allowed to do his job.

You get the same negotiator.

His name is Olly Robbins.

Thought that would have been bread & butter to mega intelligent remainers ??

But none of the Brexiters have any idea what to do.

They have no idea of the complexities of international trade and trade deals.

I think they genuinely believed it was simply a case of popping round to WH Smiths and picking up the Bilateral Trade Agreement Pack from the “Legal Forms” shelf.

Boris Johnson has cancelled his official meetings today and is talking with his advisors. Lots of speculation that he will resign as well.
