Religious and spiritual ceremonies held at Tham Luang Cave

 

 

CHIANG RAI, 17th July 2018 (NNT) – A religious and spiritual ceremony has been held at Tham Luang Cave to appease its spirits after authorities were able to successfully rescue 13 members of Moo Pa Academy youth football team from its inner caverns. 

A Brahmin Lanna ceremony took place at 8:09 a.m. yesterday before Buddhist monks performed a blessing at 9:09 a.m. and prayers began at 10:09 a.m. One of the prayers was in dedication to former Thai Navy Seal Saman Kunan, who lost his life during the rescue operation. 

Former head of the Tham Luang Cave rescue mission and now Governor of Phayao province Narongsak Osot-thanakorn, alongside current Governor of Chiang Rai Prajon Prachsakul, chaired the proceedings with many Chiang Rai locals and the faithful from nearby provinces in attendance. 

In the afternoon, a Lanna cleansing ritual was held ahead of a Lanna cave closing ceremony. Both are believed to remove any ill-intentioned spirits from the area and protect others from losing their way in the cave.

Yup...that'll do!

Not my plan with the safety measures, the total locking of the caves from May to November and other worldly stuff!

Just a bit of hocuspocus and shubby-dooby and everybody should be safe!

 

Now, back to the rain- making!

 

P.S.: for all who say "safety measures will come later...just a nice tradition..."...please don't insult my intelligence and remind yourself, of the simple fact, that this is Thailand!

Not only that it's not  Brahmanism either and, yes, its Animism a million miles away from Buddhism.

 

BTW   "losing their way in the cave"  they mean past the warning signs, along the route they took many times and don't Pass Go and collect 200 baht?

Thai Buddhism is very accommodating and even welcomes some Hindu deities into parts of it. That's City Buddhism, not to be confused with the Thai Forest tradition of Therevada Buddhism.

The only evil spirits I became aware of here are SangSom, Mekong, and Lao Khao. Most frightening is, no matter how hard the Thais try to drink the problem away, they are still around.

It's my personal opinion that things like this can explain the lack of common sense in Thailand.

Obviously "religious" refers to Buddhism.

Were the boys surveyed for their faith, in particular the "stateless" boys?

Were the rescuers so surveyed?

Were concerned citizens so surveyed?

Was it established that Jewish, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, etc. faiths had no spiritual role in the children's rescue (if one believes in such religious involvement in human affairs) and celebration?

 

What we have seen historically is the close connection between the Thai military and Buddhism as authoritarian leaders vis a vis under the banner of nationalism. Hence the possible reason for this Buddhist display. In a democratic society all faiths would be allowed representation or none.

Animism abounds.  This is why I refer to Thais as Buddhist flavored Animists.
Nothing about those ceremonies has anything to do with Buddhism although I"m sure the events will be lead by monks.
