Before I make the 200 km trip, does anyone know if Global House, Thaiwatsadu or similar stock rust converter?

 

The stuff that I remember comes in a smallish container. You paint it on and it neutralizes the rust spots (I think).

I would wait until you need something else before trekking 200km ?

 

Rust is the oxidation of iron.  It doesn't convert back to iron by applying some solution.  At best <whatever> would stop the oxidation process by eliminating the contact to air and moisture.  You are much better to brush/sand off the rust and re-prime and paint the affected area.

rust coverter is just nitric acid .

Indeed, but these things do actually work to protect against further rusting, I've used in large quantities on my first (already ancient) vehicles.

Loctite Naval Jelly does not change the rust back to iron , the phosphoric acid that it contains converts the iron oxides  to iron phosphate which is water soluble therefore can be washed off.

 

Back to the topic, I have bought Naval Jelly from Homepro a few years ago and also recently Rust Dissolver Jel by Permatex (also contains phosphoric acid) from the same place.. The latter coming in an eight oz bottle, cannot remember price.

 

First looked for it in the paint preparation area but actually found it next to the WD40 and other oil sprays

 

Of course cannot guarantee that your nearest Homepro will have it in stock.

 

Edit to add.. Homepro online shows it but unfortunately 'out of stock' Some stores may still have it on their shelves but hardly worth a long trip on the offchance.

I had quite good success  using an old PSU from a computer as power source

on my motorcycle tank...also reversed the polarity  and ( kind of)

zinc plated the inside...

wifey was not to happy about  petrol tank in kitchen sink for 2 days ..or I would have carried on till all the rust was gone.

 

Removing rust or converting rust to something else does nothing to prevent continued rusting UNLESS whatever is done prevents further oxidation.  It looks like these "converters" are actually primers that absorb rust.  Whatever.

They have rust converter in Baan Amphur Jomtien Pattaya, I love the stuff. Use it all the time at work.....

Thanks for the replies. As I was not sure if I could find a shop selling rust converter after a 200 km trip, I decided to give it a miss this time and rubbed back to bare metal and coated the spots with red oxide paint.

Rust Converter is readily available in Buriram Thailand. ATM is a budget brand of the Urai Chemical Group which have their own delivery trucks which transport Galant House Paint, Lobster Paint,  and other reasonably priced paints and home improvement products to builders merchant stores large and small in Thailand. The Urai home improvement products are made in Thailand and sold at a fraction of the cost of imported similar Home Improvement products. I've had success with the rain gutter leak sealer and the Fabric spray I bought in Buriram.

Now you need to finish the job ? Red oxide is a primer and porous, you need to seal with a top coat else the rust will just return.

Hopefully I'll outlive it returning. I've installed a new fuel tank so shouldn't be any more moisture under the tank.
