types of cement

What are the different types of cement powder sold in builders merchants. Are any of them ready mixed for mortar rendering? which is suitable for footings/brick laying?

There seems to be a color code, green is standard cement powder, red is structural, blue is flooring. But this is only my guess from what I have seen so far. Hopefully someone will be along with some facts.

It's a proper question, and you really should have a Thai with you to explain which product you need. Readymix, in its several varieties, is fairly new here.

 

A neighbor of mine needed to build a raised pad for his aircon unit. Bought a bag of what turned out to be pure cement. It wasn't long before the pad started to disintegrate.

Take a Thai speaker who understands what you want to do along to your local builder's merchant, they will tell you what you want. They will also have the relevant tools etc.

 

I've not seen concrete as an all-in-one bag (buy sand, cement and rocks separately and mix, find the ratio on the web) but we buy all-in-one mortar for small jobs (it has a picture of bricks and a trowel on the bag).

In a similar fashion cement for rendering has a small picture of a float rendering.

only the qcon renders are premixed and only need water,  for masonry you need to add sand and water.

 

The cheaper bags of cement I was told by a merchant have a low grade cement quality, I seem to recall them saying not much opc, the Tiger and IPro brands are the better ones for structural work. I personallly always use IPro.

 

The render cement has some plasticiser included and a retarder to make it more workable so its a bit more expensive, but you can still do the same job wiyh standard mortar though i tend to add washi g up liquid to the mix to make it workable.

I'm always at a loss when I see this kind of question. Back home, hundreds of times, I asked, and got Portland cement when I asked for cement. When I asked for pre mixed mortar, that's what I got. I also asked for additives from time to time, plastifier, antifreeze, quick/slow setting etc. I have no idea why they ask you every time, "what kind of cement?"

None of my houses, walls or pathways have fallen apart yet.

TPI do sell a range of ready mixed concrete and mortars, just add water.

Ok, I have been around the the block times here in Chiang Mai and TPI i have never seen.

not one of that list of products is sold here unless its only in a designated outlet?

Thai Watsadu sell TPI products, I've seen the dry concrete mix at the Bangna store in BKK. Don't know about other stores.
