Kelsall
What's up with that? Never saw it before. Something about green Wednesday or whatever. EDIT: I guess this is it. Edited August 22, 2018 by Kelsall 1
Popular Post sanemax
The idea is that you buy a reusable canvas bag and use that in the future, instead of plastic bags
Popular Post brommers
It is about time that the government grew chest hair and got the courage to ban the issue of free plastic bags. It has been done all over the world, over a decade ago in South Africa for example, and has significantly reduced litter pollution. This country is addicted to giving away bags for the smallest purchase and store & stall keepers seem bemused when I decline them, but decline them I will and so should you. 8 1

Popular Post 55Jay
They need to buck up and do away with them, not fiddle fart around like this, one day a week. Just do it and after a month, everyone will have gotten a few reusable bags at home, in the car, under the motorbike seat, etc., and that'll be the new normal. Popular Post shadowofacloud
I decided to take the issue in my own hands a long while ago. Now I never leave the house without a canvas tote bag and a few reusable containers (for smaller products such as chili peppers, mushroom, tofu etc). I live in a fairly small town in the south, so at first I was a bit of an attraction at the talad, but soon the ladies got used to my little eccentricities and other customers seem to be quite interested in the approach. Cashiers @ 7/11, Lotus and similar in the area quite used to ไม่ใช่ถุงครับ (mai chai thoong khrap - no bag please) and will happily pack your stuff in the provided bag. 3

Plastic bags have been successfully banned in quite a number of Countries...not the most affluent ones either....Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa...and guess what? IT WORKS! I was in Kenya a couple of months ago, and the streets are cleaner, no plastic riff raff bags at all, people carry their own non plastic bags around, refreshing to see it! Its 7/ 11 need to address the issue....anything you buy there....plastic bag, if its heavy another plastic bag, plastic spoons, plastic straws....given even if you dont ask for them....well done Rimping, make it SEVEN days a week! 7 1 1

Would you be willing to pay for that plastic bag if you needed one?
Popular Post amexpat
Bravo! I've been using a canvas bag for years. More convenient than several plastic bags, really. Not all plastic bags end up as litter or killing fish. Many, many are BURNED. That's not good for creatures who breathe. Let's keep after it. Tell 7/11 when you buy two yogurts and a drink you don't need two plastic spoons and a plastic straw - in a plastic bag of course. 5

Popular Post richard_smith237
Wifey was at Villa in Bkk the other day. While shopping she saw a commotion at the checkout. People were getting upset - villa policy was suddenly 'no plastic bags' on this specific day. They were told they could buy a 'bag for life' type bag made of material for 1xx baht. People were just leaving their shopping and walking out! While the no plastic bag day may seem an excellent environmentally friendly policy it is flawed & and an extremely clumsy way of dealing with the issue. Just ban them full stop & offer a viable alternative, i.e. Paper bags or boxes or cheap material bags. But... Give people notice so they can bring their own bags and plan accordingly... & don't make profit on the alternatives (i.e. Sell the material bags at cost to make them viable & an attractive option) The surprise 'no plastic bags' day caught a lot of people out and simply irritated them. There are better ways of handling these issues. Edited August 22, 2018 by richard_smith237

flare
Same thing happened to me in Rimping Mae Hia Market yesterday- I bought one of their canvas bags for 50 baht (I was also offered a box). My wife chatted with the cashier in Thai- apparently, they also have the option of 'borrowing' a canvas bag and returning it for a refund on your next trip, which I thought was fair enough. It was a sturdy, good-sized bag, and I'm going to start using it (though there are days I need 4-5 bags instead only one like yesterday- I guess I'll need a few of them). I don't complain about having to bring bags when I go to Makro, and every little bit helps. Edited August 22, 2018 by flare
FolkGuitar
Wonderful step in the right direction. Although initially a pain in the ass, it's easy enough to get used to it. I've carried a canvas bag when shopping for years. And although it doesn't address the problem that occurs when one does a 'big shop' and buy enough to fill 4-5 bags, for the daily needs it certainly does help clean up the environment. And for those once a month 'big shopping days...' have it delivered. Both Rimping and Tops will deliver for free if your bill is over 1500 baht. 5kg of kitty litter, a case of beer, a couple of sacks of rice... we don't want to walk too far carrying these any way!
worgeordie
Thats a good thing, maybe it could have been planned a bit better, the plastic bags that RimPing, are biodegradable anyway, which I found out ,after keeping some sand in them,in a short time they all fell to bits. I was in RimPing yesterday and did not know about no carrier bag day, only bought a couple of things, and the cashier is looking for small box to put the goods in,don't bother i said, and just carried them out in my hands, with receipt, just incase the security guard thought i was nicking them. Big C is the worst for plastic bags,at the check out i have to keep repacking them, filling them up,instead of only a couple of items in a bag. Don't know why some people are complaining about no bags, but been Chiang Mai forum, its the norm.the less plastic bags the better, and all other single use plastics, its common sense really. regards worgeordie

Popular Post FolkGuitar
2 hours ago, worgeordie said: .......the plastic bags that RimPing, are biodegradable anyway, We need to understand that those 'biodegradable plastic bags' aren't really 'biodegradable.' They are just 'fall-apartable.' They are still made with the same plastic components, but those are held together with a cornstarch binder. After a short while, the cornstarch does biodegrade, but leaves behind millions of micro-beads of plastic. These micro-beads have been showing up in massive amounts in the stomachs of fish! This is a problem as they don't pass through the fish... they just fill up the fish, which tends to sicken from starvation, which reduces the breeding stock to replenish the fish population. Unhealthy for the fish, unhealthy for the fish population, and unhealthy for the planet. Plastic Micro-beads have become a major problem in the last few years, even showing up inside drinking water containers being sold as 'pure spring water.' Let's scrap ALL the plastic bags, and return to paper bags. Those come from a renewable cash crop, which is actually healthy for the environment. No one is cutting down jungles or virgin timber stands for paper any more. It's 99% planted and harvested renewable crop, managed though sustainable forestry methods. And paper bags ARE completely biodegradable. While there are concerns about the production methods/carbon footprint associated with making them, it's still a hell of a lot more eco-friendly than plastic, and is a viable solution to the problem until people learn to bring their own cloth bags, and manufacturers stop packaging in plastic. 2

Thailand
Been using reusable bags for over 25 years, no doubt the world is a better place for that. ? If you ever went to Pattaya 25 years ago it may well be the case.? Rimping sell strong Xtra large reusable bags, hold a lot of goods but usually need a trolley to get it to the car.
