PHUKET:-- Local boat company Cholamark will hold a free training exercise at Chalong Pier this Saturday (Sept 1) to educate local captains and crews on how to safely launch and have passengers enter a life raft in case of emergency.

The exercise will start at 1:30pm and will take about two hours, explained Hans Martin, owner and founder of Cholamark.

“The aim of the event is to improve safety at sea by increasing knowledge about life rafts in general,” Mr Martin told The Phuket News.

A good idea. All tourist vessels should be made to have stability tests carried out and proper calculations made for maximum number of passengers.

Never mind "offering" it.

It should be ******* compulsory.

The boat operators are waiting fore the "free" life rafts and vest,so they can sell them.

Maybe you can tell navy and other ones who are responsible for this.

Don't confuse opinion with fact.

A positive improvement for safety no doubt but I am still a great believer that management of vessels leaving harbour in adverse conditions is the key to safety.

Only one?  How many people do you think can get into it, especially if the crew are already in it?

Requirement in Thailand is to have liferafts on the boat for number of guests allowed on the boat + staff + 10%. Liferafs are only required though if the boat has a certain size, for smaller boats liferafts are not required.

Capacity of liferafts most commonly used is 25 pax. So with a boat allowed for 50 + staff that means 3 liferafts required.

Here's a thought.

Perhaps some training could be offered on the correct use of the vessel itself, in that that, maybe it's possible the life rafts will be rarely needed.  ?
