webfact
International passengers set to face 200 baht increase to fly abroad Picture: Daily News The Airports Authority of Thailand are proposing and increase of 200 baht on flying abroad. Fees currently incorporated in to ticket prices are 400 baht per passenger per trip. The AOT are submitting a proposal to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to raise this to 600 baht. AOT chief Darun Saengchai said this would provide an extra 200 million baht for airport efficiency and maintenance. There will be no increase for domestic flight as this is deemed enough at present. Darun told Daily News studies showed that the increase will not affect passenger numbers. Rents at airports also face a hike but the authorities promise to ensure that prices for food and drink do not rise as a result. Exactly, a few years ago you used to pay 500 Baht at the entrance to the departure gates. They then switched to incorporating the charge into ticket prices, and surreptitiously added 200 Baht. So I want to know who gave Daily News those figures in the article, and do the authorities really think we are that dumb. Now the departure tax will be 900 Baht not 600. 7 1 3

The spin-doctor (aka creative accountant) will reply that it's necessary to consider each 'cost centre' separately, and the 'international cost centres' just don't pay for themselves - sufficiently. Therefore an 'adjustment' is required. Not bad eh - I should have been a professional liar politician. 1

Perhaps the 700 Baht is made up of components with so much going to the AOT and so much to the Treasury. The article doesn't make it clear. ZeVonderBearz
1000 baht rentry fee plus this fee means that your not so budget Air Asia flight to one of the neighbouring ASEAN countries is going to cost an extra £50 or $60 USD. 1

I wonder when the vendors are going to say enough is enough? To make these outlets profitable they have no choice to increase prices. It is after all business.

Look at the details of your ticket to the USA or Europe and you'll find that the vast majority of the taxes weren't paid to Thailand. Thailand's airfare ticket taxes are still cheap.

Specifics are unavailable was usual. They are already operating at 42% profit margin. Monopolies are suppose to make 10%, with the remaining money put into public coffers. It looks like somebody wants to cash on before the end junta mania. Thailand officialdom looking dubious as usual.
shaurene
What the he'll are they doing now. Probably a new minister comes up with getting more money for a new invention. The government are concerned with making sure that tourists keep coming in. This will increase flight prices and people will look at other places like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Then it will be, tourist numbers down, why? this is not the way to keep tourist's coming in. Thailand are killing their trade.

Vacuum
200 baht extra on a ticket that probably cost 20,000- 40,000 baht, big deal. However, when it comes to lady drinks or tipping, people seems happy to pay through the nose.
ubonjoe
I read in another news source that it is the Department of Airports that it is in charge of other international airports not under the AOT that is raising the it from 400 to 600 baht. Thailand are killing their trade. Hello? It's a 200 baht increase. If that causes people to go to Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos instead then they probably can't afford a flight anyway and won't be going anywhere. 200 baht, get a grip! And by the way, the departure tax is $25 in Cambodia. They are killing their trade! Probably Cambodian tourism numbers will be down and people will be looking at Myanmar instead. Myanmar is only $10 so that gives an extra $15 to spend on a Tai Die shirt, except you will need a Mynamar e-visa to enter the country and that is $10. Aaaaaagh, that's another nail in the coffin of the Burmese tourism industry. Where should we look next? Well done though, you win the most hysterical over-reaction post of the day.
