Thai media Pattaya Eastern News reported that police in Pattaya suspect that an 80 year old French man ended his own life by jumping from the 17th floor balcony of his condominium.

Michel Hostailler was found dead on the ground with multiple fractures. He was not wearing shoes.

Pattaya's chief of tourist police Lt Col Piyapong Ensarn was on the scene with other officers.

Mr Hostailler's boyfriend Siwaporn Pala, 38, had to be treated by rescue services at the scene after bursting into tears by the body and fainting.

After recovering his composure Siwaporn said that he and the victim had shared room 965 together for about a year. His boyfriend had shown no signs of depression though he did have some problems with an ex wife in France.

Yesterday morning Siwaporn said that he went to the temple to give alms and make merit and embraced his boyfriend affectionately on the way out. Everything was normal and there was no indication that he was going to end his life.

Police found no signs of a struggle or anything out of place in the room.

But they found a note in French. The contents were not revealed in the story on Facebook.

The cops said they believed that stress from some problem faced by the victim led him to commit suicide.

A full autopsy will be carried out at the Police Hospital and the embassy has been informed.

The Jomtien condo was not named in the report.

does it really matter if he was wearing SHOES or NOT....stupid reporting !!

It is a bit daft. If he was living in a condo he wouldn’t have been wearing his shoes indoors and he didn’t need to put them on to go outside as he jumped off his own bloody balcony. Anyway. Rip old fella.

Lucky that he left a note in French. I’m presuming that it was a suicide note? If so that clears the boyfriend. I wonder if this is happening as frequently in the West but is just not reported? The suicide rate of foreigners in Thailand is troubling.

I suppose there may have been intended implications that he was not out walking and was killed in a hit & run or something similar.... At least that's all I can see into this comment.

It's clumsy reporting - but isn't the reporting in Thailand always clumsy to some degree?

Not a very smart thing to do, taking my words out of context.

Clearly you have been lucky in your life, never suffered serious depression, well i have.

Being told you will never walk again was enough to push me into  a serious depression, i wanted to end my life, but i was unable to lift my arms more than a few inches, i was strapped down on my bed because i kept pulling out the tubes that were keeping me alive, i was brought out of it by my wife and a few very close friends, i got a lot of support.

This poor Frenchman clearly had no support, was alone in a depressed state and thought that jumping off the balcony was the only answer.

The suicide rate in Thailand as a whole ranks 28 of 177 countries. France comes in at 25th. I know in my home country it is very seldom reported in media.

In English law it's said that someone can only commit suicide when "the balance of their mind is disturbed" i.e. temporarily off their rocker. When people are in the mental state to commit suicide, their reasoning goes out of the window. They don't have the ability to consider the consequences.

As for Thai children observing the scene, a few months ago, a Thai guy jumped off a bridge onto a railway line just as a train was coming. His head was severed and remained near the bridge at the side of the track, his body was deposited on the track, a couple of hundred metres away. Really gory.

The police took hours to remove the body or even cover it. As it was a busy Soi, near my home, a large crowd gathered, taking selfies and generally having a good time. Whole families arrived and their children were impressed with the "entertainment".

Death doesn't have the same conotations as it does in the West, just part of daily life, it just washes over children, which, maybe, is as it should be.

That's awful. I would do whatever it took to ensure my Son is not exposed to images such as this which have been proven to have a psychological impact on a young mind.

That families were rocking up is quite sick, that they were not trying to protect their kids shows a huge degree of ignorance.

Just because 'others do it' doesn't make it any less stupid -  IMO this not as things should be.

Regarding the psychological mindset of someone who is about to commit suicide - I get it that their thought process do not follow consequential logic - However, it doesn't make the impact of their actions on innocents any less severe, and while we may all feel sympathetic are we not also highly sympathetic to those unnecessarily impacted by such a choice?

All do respect none of us have any clue what happened here. It could have been accidental or if it was on purpose it may have stemmed from some terminal condition. Maybe it was murder, who knows. The letter my have just been regular correspondence.

I agree. Which SPECIFIC building?

Is there some legal problem with naming it?

It's called NEWS. That means actual facts and information.

That would include the specific condo building.
