I have just extended my visa for additional 12 months based on retirement. Everything was done as normal and my passport was stamped with the extension no problem. But the officer said that he will be coming to visit me at home and took my cell number and checked when I would be available. He didn't say exactly what was the purpose of the visit although I assume it is some sort of check up. I am not working and everything is legitimate, but I've never had this before.

Has anyone heard of this type of home visit? Do you know what they are looking for? Anything to be concerned about?

Any feedback or update on the retirement situation would be appreciated.

Many had this.

Repeated reports/threads during the last months.

Nothing to be concerned about.

What the purpose is for retirement extension?

I don't have an idea really.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually did a forum search for home visits but couldn't see anything relevant. As you said, my question was really why they would do a home visit for a retirement extension? If its a simple check up to see if I have supplied the correct information, then it seems they will need a lot of resources to check everyone out.

Quite common with an extension based on marriage- no biggy.

Yes but the OP just did his retirement extension.

So what do they want to achieve?

Most elaborate address verification?

Checking that he does not operate a shop/workshop/rent rooms?

First time this year after never having a visit from immigration in 13 years.

He might as well have kept his car running he only stood outside for a picture then shot off like an F1 racer.

The immigration follows an  order by the government to check on the houses and living conditions of foreigners, just to check if everything is in order, or not. Happened to me too. They took pictures of me inside the house, as well as photos of my kids, who were at school at that time. We talked and their left. A very friendly visit from three ladies.

Yep, they do that.

Had that a couple of months ago after living here over 4 years.  They just want to take a picture of you in front of the house, with the address showing, and check your passport.

They told me they were coming back every month but it is going on 3 months since that one visit, so I guess he was joking.

This happened to me when I switched from marriage to retirement extension. A week later 4 I/Os came to house in official IO car and uniforms (looking like a law enforcement team) during their lunch time break and did what seemed like a standard routine, i.e. stand and take photos with officers, show my passport pages with stamps they had just stamped the week before, and talk with the home owners. They insisted on coming into house, so we had to tie the dogs up first. Took about 15 minutes.

About the scenario that the OP describes.

A bureaucratic procedure followed without questioning

Not only in Thailand.

This was at Phang Nga immigration. Visits for the extension based on marriage seem to be more common, but I think this is a new thing for retirement visa. Thanks for the other replies confirming it was a quick check on the address, But I am still interested to know if that was for marriage or retirement extension.

Never heard of anyone on a retirement visa in Chonburi getting a home visit. Marriage visas, yes.

Maybe they were expecting a tip after their visit.

Probably nothing more complex than a couple of Immigration officers doing a long lunch. The home visits are a great excuse to get out of the office, go for lunch etc. They have probably run out of marriage extensions to visit, but still want an excuse to get out of the office. So schedule in a couple of retire extension visits.

OP, is your place close to a popular lunch restaurant ?

friend of mine did his 1 year Retirement extension yesterday in Phuket<
officer accepted all papers and than told him,: "lets go visit ur house"
and they followed him home...

checked his clothes closet

Well if he does drop by make sure you have a few coldies in the fridge, bring him in, sit down have a chat, have a few brews together....never bypass an opportunity to make a friend in immigration.

Just typical Thai immigration wanting to show their authority while wearing their nice uniforms.

Nothing better to do with their time.

But the OP said he is on retirement extensions, is it not enough for people

like the OP to have to report every 90 days without hounding them at their homes?

They just want to see they "actually" live there and not running a bar in that naughty area...?

I live in the middle of nowhere which the immigration officer seemed to know! So clearly they just want to check that I live where I say. All seems very unnecessary as I have to check in every 90 days anyway as noted! Keep calm and carry on ?
