Begpacking – ‘How to’ guide for aspiring travelling beggars

I remember back in 1988 there was this bloke in the guesthouse I was staying in, who went out begging every day, complete with a sign saying that he needed money to fly home. His boast was how he'd been doing it for months, spending his takings on booze, drugs and girls. Not a new phenomenon.

They were all like that in Cleethorpes  ?

  • I'm not sure if you're referring to Southeast Asia on a Shoestring published by Lonely Planet? If so, I don't recall any scams being suggested in there?

Once I asked my Thai friend, what he think about beggars with sign "need money for travel". He replied: "If you want to travel, get job, save money and then travel. Why I should work and pay for someone's travel/entertainment?"

p.s. He is not stingy. He regularly helps those who really in need (orphanage etc).

Yeah, I had to take a look twice at that post myself. I simply rationalized it--back in the day can mean back before laws were written against certain drugs; freely available can mean there are no laws against it, but can also mean any laws against drugs are simply not enforced; certainly both situations existed, back in the day

here is a quite vocal section on this site who, for reasons best know to themselves, get into a hissy fit whenever backpackers are mentioned. seeing themselves somehow 'better' than backpackers. i have a theory, and it may be judgemental, that such folks are actually jealous

You might be right about the "jealousy thing". Backpackers today are almost exclusively middle class chinless wonders, slumming it in their gap year. Backed by Mummy and Daddy's money, no real need to beg, it's just part of the "experience" for them.

Most will go home to take up jobs in the City (secured by Daddy's old school chums).

I don't give them money because I'm not a mug, all they are likely to get from me is a swift kick up the jacksey.

A few years back we visited Colorado. During one excursion, we walked past several street beggars in downtown Denver. My wife's comment later was along the lines, that these people have a chance to work in America and they don't. I thought she had a valid point...

I’m not that bothered about what people do. The busker is at least entertaining people. And as for beggars giving or not giving is a choice, no one forces you to give them money. I don’t consider it my business.

i have a theory, and it may be judgemental, that such folks are actually jealous, they never experienced the freedom, friendship, sheer enjoyment of travelling through a country outside the air con bubble of taxi/hotel/bar. they never met the wonderful locals and enjoyed their hospitality instead they have to pay for someone to be their friend/gf/bf.

It is judgmental, in that the best is:

the freedom, friendship, sheer enjoyment of travelling through a country outside the air con bubble of taxi/hotel/bar. meeting the wonderful locals and enjoying their hospitality with your chosen vacation girlfriend, #136. Always hit the bar first.

Amen. And i would end up the discussion with this statement.

Why do people care about whether someone they don't know is giving money to someone else they don't know?

your "friend" sounds like an idiot.

I also remember from those books that they had tips and tricks how to cheat...tips like get a presscard from KSR and go there and there to get free entrance/food and so on.

There were many more certificates and so for sale on KSR and the books wrote how to use them.

Also they wrote tips like: When in Oz you go to the pokeys (wear a collar), you throw 1$ in the fruitmachine and after that you go to the free buffet....I also did that and it was great! Mixed grill for 1$....

With this much creativity and ingenuity, you would think they would be able to make more per hour working than preying on others...

Those fake cards on KSR were useless , there was nothong that you could do with them .

If your memory is so good, name one place where you could get free entrance and food, using the fake press card ?

They look dirty, smelly and I expect unfit bodies and greasy hair.... I despise them..... and the beg packers

I travelled extensively when I was younger. One thing that sticks out in my mind about my first trip to Thailand was an American woman screaming at an elderly Thai lady because the price of laundry had gone up 5 baht per kg since the last time she was here. It was ugly. Two things came out of that for me. Thais have the ability to not react to such outbursts. Some backpackers, some of the time, do not showcase humanity at its best.

Begpackers who ply their trade in a country like Thailand where so many people are under the breadline, are leeches.

YOu are funny.

Were There or is there such type of guides on the internet telling people how to scam others ?

Surely not, but I think the OP may mean backpacker frugal type of guides

I was in Khao SAN road last week, it had about 10 people walking through, it was spot the backpacker !

Some of the cafes had more expensive coffee than Starbucks !

i guess the rents are expensive there nowadays.

I totally agree with my friend.

Will you dare to tell me the same? ?

Or you can only insult people who cannot answer you?
