Popular Post webfact
Williams fined $17,000 for U.S. Open code violations Sep 8, 2018; New York, NY, USA; Serena Williams of the United States yells at chair umpire Carlos Ramos in the women's final against Naomi Osaka of Japan on day thirteen of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY SPORTS NEW YORK (Reuters) - Serena Williams has been fined $17,000 (£13,156) for the code violations she received during the U.S. Open final, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said on Sunday. During Saturday's match, which she lost 6-2 6-4 to Japan's Naomi Osaka, Williams, was handed a coaching violation and a point penalty for breaking her racquet before a heated argument with umpire Carlos Ramos ended with her losing a game. The tournament referee's office fined the former world number one $10,000 for the "verbal abuse" of Ramos, $4,000 for being warned for coaching and $3,000 for smashing her racket. Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles tile on Saturday, vigorously disputed each of the violations during the match. She demanded Ramos apologise for handing her a coaching violation and later called the umpire a "thief" for giving her a point penalty. Popular Post seajae
she cant handle being beaten and is trying to use sexism as the reason instead. She was absolutely pathetic with what she did and shows she should seriously try to change her attitude or give tennis away if she cannot handle loosing. Its a wonder she didnt use racism as well, she was completely out of place and deserved what she got

Popular Post lanista
Just your typical spoilt brat American. 17 K is lunch money to this lot. She ruined the moment for the other player who looked very shaken & upset after winning the title. Why dont the William sisters retire? The standard of womens tennis has hit a low point.... again. McEnroe says the 700th ranked man would knock off Serena/Venus or any of the top 10 womens players. Why are they earning the same prizemoney as the men ? Women players are grossly overpaid , underworked and overrated. Edited September 10, 2018 by lanista

I don't particularly like Serena, but why would she retire, when very few are able to match her abilities on the tennis court? 3

JAG
If the umpire had responded with: " Goodness, you're gorgeous when you're angry!" Do you think she would have exploded? I would have happily given him a lift to the opticians afterwards!
Popular Post puck2
Shame on Williams because of her extremely unfair behavior. Remember please, her uncontrolled malfunction wasn't the first one. It was completely stupid to make a sexism action out of Ramos' decision, wrong or not. She had to accept it! She exaggerated umpires decision and didn't stop defaming him. She ruined Osaka's deserved fun and enjoyment of this win and title. Ugly! Shame on the (mostly) American audience, too. Naomi didn't complain about Wiliam's nonsense. Although attacking the umpire W. indirectly harmed Naomi. My congratulations to N.Osaka because she didn't lose her nerves - as a newcomer!!! Great. And N. undoubtedly was the better player. I read about this ridiculous fine (for a millionaire): it is as if you would be fined to pay for a stamp. Popular Post Gecko123
Cut the woman some slack. She just had a kid and has been struggling with post partem depression. She's one of the classiest female athletes of all time. Her complaint that there's a double standard for women tennis players about verbally abusing umpires may have validity. With that said, looking at that mangled racket lying on the ground all I could think of was that would be my collar bone if I ever got into a domestic dispute with her. 2 2

If your definition of 'classy' includes threatening tennis officials with violence, then I may agree with you. This isnt her first episode like this by any means. At her age and experience, she has no excuse. I think she just assumed that she would cruise to victory amid the adulation of her hometown crowd. When it became obvious that her opponent would win, she came unhinged. 8

Did she already have the baby (and post partem depression) in 2009 when she struggled against the Belgian champ Clisters) and did attack the (female) umpire in a similar way?

Which for me was the most sickening part of the whole episode. Williams deserved everything she got from the umpire he was absolutely on point with all of his decisions, yet the crowd continued to boo him. Really unsporting. Worse still they continued to boo during the presentation, ruining a young girl's greatest moment and reduced her to tears. Disgusting behaviour from the crowd, Williams I can excuse as tennis players can be temperamental, everyone enjoyed McEnroe's outbursts. Osaka won fair and square, the crowd's behaviour was inexcusable. Really let USA down. It would never have happened at Wimbledon. 8

Doesn't matter where they are from they all seem to come across as miserable, petulant, mumbling twonks during interviews- clearly in their DNA. Osaka didn't deserve this- she should be basking in her victory instead of being reduced to tears. Acting like hormonal teenagers when they are in their thirties is pathetic. For all that she denied it her coach admitted he was trying to coach her from the stands. Edited September 10, 2018 by Psimbo
Dap
Just gotta' laugh at all the grousing over Serena sullying the "graceful" sport when if it wasn't for Connors and McEnroe bitchin' up a storm that same "graceful" sport wouldn't enjoy the massive following it does today.
