TORONTO (Reuters) - Robert Redford bowed out on Monday from a 50-year acting career, calling what he has said will be his final movie "a wonderful film to go out on."

The Toronto Film Festival audience erupted with applause after the screening of comedy caper "The Old Man & the Gun" in which Redford, 81, plays a charming, real-life bank robber who was caught 17 times during the course of a 60 year crime career but who managed to escape from jail every time.

"I've always been attracted with the idea of outlaws since I was a kid and I played that out in my work a lot, so this just followed suit," the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" star said.

"It's just an upbeat film. It's a true story. It's a wonderful film to go out on," he said.

Redford said last month that he would retire from acting after the release of "The Old Man & the Gun". He has said he wants to spend more time on art - his first love - and plans to continue directing.

Movies like "All the President's Men," "The Sting" and "Out of Africa" turned Redford into one of the biggest stars of the 1970s and 1980s but despite winning a directing Oscar for "Ordinary People" in 1980, he has never won an Academy Award for acting.

Director David Lowery said "The Old Man & the Gun" was "a spiritual successor" to the movies that made Redford a star and that he shot the movie in the style of 1970s crime films.

Asked to sum up Redford's appeal, Lowery said that the actor's voice and face on camera had a quality that "can captivate you like nothing else."

"He has it and very few people do," Lowery said.

"The Old Man & the Gun," which also stars Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover and Casey Affleck, opens in U.S. movie theaters on Sept. 28.

I thought his best movies where  Jeremiah Johnson and Three Days of the Condor.  Downhill Racer wasn't bad, either.  He has a great body of work, and will be missed.

Trailer for this film looks like it might be good? Cast is awesome: some old-timers: Sissy Spacek, Tom Waits, Danny Glover, and newcomers like Denzell's son, John David Washington (awesome in BlacKKKlansman, and Ballers).

The screenplay is by New Yorker staff writer David Grann; I remember the article from The New Yorker ca. 2003.

I didn't see your name in the title.

I like the  movies you listed.    My favorite by quite a margin is not so widely  known I believe.     I've watched "Havana"  numerous times  and always enjoy it.     Lina Olin, the Swedish actress co-starring  in the film is enough  in itself to make me enjoy it.

Three of these liked films directed by Sydney Pollack: Jeremiah Johnson, Three Days of the Condor and Havana.

Michael Ritchie directed Downhill Racer and The Candidate, the latter being one of my favorite Robert Redford films, but hard to choose just ten favs from his repertoire.

I like how both Paul Newman and Robert Redford; Butch and Sundance, decided at a certain point that no they were not doing more films. Age takes it toll and they did not want to be a caricature as there health declines.

"Sheriff Bledsoe: I never met a soul more affable than you, Butch, or faster than the Kid, but you're still nothing but two-bit outlaws on the dodge. It's over, don't you get that? Your time is over and you're gonna die bloody, and all you can do is choose where".

I thought Spy Games was pretty good, too.

Not a movie buff myself, always viewed actors as grossly overpaid pretenders.....give me a book any day.

This might be a bit out there, but have you considered that it's possible to enjoy more than one art form?

Yes it is.    We all have choices.

I earlier spoke about a  Robert Redford film (Havana  https://www4.123movies.st/watch/havana.kwjo6/vym0y7 )  that I feel is my favorite.    Anyone notice I offer a link to the film I post about.

My post as with so many is not meant to offend in any way.

If a person chooses to read and shun films, I say "good for them".   Reading is great.    Films offer a different experience than reading.

I don't happen to read as well as I did in the past or I could easily do the same.

Good luck to all.

My run at a top 10 as an actor, forgetting about his directorial gems; Oscar for Best Director for Ordinary People, and a few others like The Conspirator, Quiz Show, Horse Whisperer, A River Runs Through It, Milagro Beanfield War.

As an actor…admittedly eclectic…in no particular order:

Downhill Racer
The Candidate
The Last Castle
The Natural
All the President’s Men
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Little Fauss and Big Halsey
Barefoot in the Park
Three Days of the Condor

Yes, I so appreciate this spam site popping up alerts telling me my computer is infected with a virus, and opening pop under windows with online casino ads. And, no movie to be found. Thanks.
