Loud..nothing worse than them thai soaps. My wife was watching them on her phone and she watches thai horror movies movies that have some girl always screaming. Drives me crazy. I bought a new phone that came with ear buds. So I gave them to her. Ahhh peace and quiet. Until she starts talking with them in her ear!

I will tell you who isn't loud: Japanese girls.

Except when they are squealing in those horrible movies.

I’m assuming you’re talking jap porn.

Never could quite my head around that strange squeaking sound

mmmm, you are clearly a much smarter man than me.

When we came back to the US, I subscribed to a streaming Thai TV service on our Roku.

Now I suffer screaming Lakorn’s in surround sound.

I’m the one relegated to wearing ear buds!

I guess it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Thai girls, indeed all girls, females want to be heard. They can also get exasperated at foreigners not understanding Thai. Not shouting to be nasty but sometimes they feel that (wrongly) if they shout you will understand better.

just wanted to add to this.

its not just an asian thing. its also semi middle eastern

my dads wife is persian.

I swear to god i can hear her at the shopping centre 1.2km away when she is on the phone.

sometimes it sounds like they are having a cat fight.

they just increase the db of their voice to levels my own could never get to im sure they are talking about shit they bought shopping but the complete lack of understanding and level of voice really adds a sense of some form of dv is happening in that house.

Personality differences. Not all of them screech. The krengjai culture can make it a bit harder to initially weed out the nutcases, because they are forced to hide their non-polite personalities. Once you know them for about a month or so, you'll be able to see that non-polite side that they're not allowed to show in public and keep bottled up. Keep in mind that this is why tempers can flare so much in Thailand. They are repressed when they go out in public, so when they explode, they REALLY do explode like crazy and vent out months of repressed frustration.

But mine never screeches. She stays quiet, refuses to talk, and ignores me if she gets upset. Passive-aggressive behavior at most. Very easy to resolve issues and never any major issues.

Hmmmm not sure if it's healthy to bottle up anger. Teach her to vent her anger in a healthy way. If it's repressed too long, maybe your smaller member is in danger while you sleep :)) _count the carving knives before you go to bed.

Sitting here reading this while my (99% of the time soft spoken) wife & daughters are getting ready to run an errand....

She's in the (half up/raised) 2nd story master bedroom tasking/asking the 2 girls = one of which is in the side yard at the washing machine & the other is at the front of the front yard....Ouch.....

Now - they are all about 10 feet from each other and in quiet tones again....

I've never been on the bad side of that volume....Thankfully....

Well, my beautiful Thai wife lives with me in Tasmania, and I swear she doesn't need a telephone to chat with our family in Korat, and for some reason always feels the need to speak to ancient mother (who is deaf as a post anyway) as soon as I switch on the golf or the rugby on TV. Many years ago, I served in an aircraft carrier with the loudest flight deck broadcast system in the world at that time, you could hear it 12 miles away in Plymouth when the wind was southerly, but I swear it had nothing on my wife having a phone chat with her relatives in Issan! Yet unless she has a telephone to her ear, she is normally quietly spoken, save the odd occasion where I have misbehaved of course. So maybe it is just Issan folk who shriek down the phone?

The level of sound indicates their level of enthusiasm to the other party....

Actually, i think it's an Eastern thing. Growing up in London, we had Greek Cypriot neighbours, who were lovely generous people and great friends to  my parents and me. BUT, when the lady of the house had a quiet conversation, the entire neighbourhood heard it! So much so that my father joked that when she talked to her family in Cyprus, she didn't need a phone - just open the door!  ?

When I started to travel in my teens, i noticed that as one went further east, people just got louder - a few years in the Middle East promoted that theory and travelling around SE Asia confirmed it!

Of course, they may be wondering why we strange Westerners all whisper to each other.

To the east, only the Japanese don’t speak loudly...

Japanese are odd too.

I have a Japanese friend. When she speaks Japanese, it’s thats usual high pitched tone Japanese ladies have.

Yet when she's speaking English it’s at least a couple of octaves lower.

And after 6 pages of this I have been observing Mrs G’s speaking patterns a bit more closely. The same phenomena seems to be true.

She was on a video conference call in English with work last week, everything as you would expect, finished that and immediately went into a webcam chat with her sister in Thai.

The conversation volume levels were night and day
