An elderly Chaiyaphum man was allegedly hacked to death Wednesday by a homeless man he gave food and shelter to out of sympathy, police said.

Narong Saenkhayun, 62, who lived alone, suffered fatal injuries to his head and died in his hut at a rice field in Ban Na Sida in Tambon Ban Dua of Chaiyaphum's Kaset Somboon district.

Neighbours said they heard Narong quarrel with the homeless man, who was later identified as Arthit Dasuchung, in the evening before his body was found at night.

Police caught Arthit later, walking in the area with a cleaver in his hand. They said he was a drug addict who was too high on methamphetamine to be interviewed.

Although he had no ID, Arthit was estimated to be about 28 years old.

Neighbours said Narong recently provided shelter and food for Arthit out of sympathy.

Drugs in Thailand cause so much misery and suffering. No different to anywhere else I guess but we just hear more about it because the violence is extreme and in our faces constantly.

Anyway one bonus is that the the assassin will soon be drug free and no longer homeless.

a drug addict who was too high on methamphetamine to be interviewed.

This is the third ya ba horror story in less than a week. How many more do we need before the government reverses its avowed intention to decriminalise this dangerous drug?

Another one that is breathing air that should be reserved for law abiding citizens.!!!

I think this man was not right in his head before he took this drug. I'll bet he cuould have done the same thing being "a law abiding citizen" and drinking alcohol.

In fact, I think it would be a good idea to legalize state controlled "safe" drugs, thereby eliminating stupid and dangerous "home made drugs". If people want to stay awake 24 hours, there's other drugs than ja-ba, that the government could supply.

Maybe not just legalise, but possibly manufacture and distribute? This would cut out a lot of drug-related crime and divert money from the black economy into the national coffers.
