Officials on Monday urged about 50 residents of a Nakhon Ratchasima village to get rabies shots quickly after the beef they ate turned out to have come from a rabid cow.

The cow in Moo 11, Sida district, died of an unknown cause on September 13. Its head was removed to be tested and the owner was told to bury the carcass.

Instead, the hindquarters were cooked and shared among neighbours.

The Livestock Development Nakhon Ratchasima Office determined on September 18 that the cow died of rabies.

At first I thought it said the villagers were to be shot quickly. Better than a slow, painful death I suppose.

So can someone tell me why they needed to get rabies shots? The story is BS.

Cooking infected meat at standard cooking temperatures for the meat will inactivate the virus. Rabies virus, a lyssavirus, which causes a fatal encephalo meningomyelitis is highly susceptible to desiccation and sunlight. Boiling over 90 degrees for 2 hrs (means lukewarm heating) completely makes the virus inactive.

In Issan they like eating raw meat, fish, plus if cooked ,they are

not going to boil it for 2 hours.

In Isaan they like their meat, exclude fish as that is another story, sun dried and desiccated which is then cooked. The meat doesn't have to be boiled for 2 hours either. It just needs 2 hours of being cooked in tepid water for the rabies virus to be killed.

It takes 122 degrees Fahrenheit, or 50 degrees Celsius to kill. It (the rabies) will also die if the meat is completely dried out. The thing is, that when they sundrie the meat it is commonly done so in a few hours/a days time.. It does not completely dry out, and when cooking it, it goes quick. Most thais are quick cookers. So the center of the meat, especially if there are bones, will not reach the 122 degree mark for long enough to kill the virus.

Can't verify your quote just now however, your inference / statement that this story is BS (a cringe worthy american out for "bull shit" that even CNN presenters seem to thrive on) is not based on facts, unless you were at the BBQ, were you? ????

Those Thais knew what they were doing when they ate that beef. They ate the meat fron the hind quarters away from the saliva areas.  Once the saliva has dried the rabies virus dies anyway.

Live rabies virus will not survive for more than 24 hours in dead animals when temperatures reach 70 F.

For anyone that would eat the carcass of an animal that died of an unknown cause, maybe your first thoughts would indeed have been the best option.

Not that easy to find restaurants nor supermarkets who document the death causes of the meat they offer so the most of us (if not all) actually eat without knowing....:whistling:
