No legal reason for PM to step down as junta head after stating ‘interest in politics’: Wissanu

General Prayut Chan-o-cha is not required by law to step down as leader of the ruling junta if he is interested in entering politics ahead of the next general election, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Tuesday.

 

Wissanu, who is in charge of the government’s legal affairs, was responding to calls from critics for the prime minister to also leave his position as head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) now that he had hinted at a plan to enter politics ahead of the national election.

 

Prayut said on Monday that he was “interested in political work” and hinted at becoming a prime ministerial candidate for a political party that he had yet to identify.

 

“It’s the prime minister’s personal matter. Nothing is strange for someone to be interested in politics. He does not need to resign as the prime minister. And the law does not require General Prayut to resign as the NCPO leader if he wants to enter politics,” Wissanu said at Government House.

 

The deputy PM declined to answer a question on whether he would join a future administration headed by Prayut if approached to do so.

required by law?  What law?  And what would it matter if there was or was not a law?  The man took over in a coup which was not allowed by law.  Laws are only as good as the system that enforces them and that people abide by.

God, the lies these people constantly tell with a straight face. For years (almost) we've heard that Prayut is not allowed to stand directly as a candidate in the election - and now suddenly, magically, with a wave of the all-powerful junta wand, it is perfectly OK.

 

I don't know about you, but I find these CONSTANT insults to our intelligence and this constant abuse of ill-gotten power beyond annoying ...

But..but..every morning he wakens to a constant chorus of "Stay,oh please stay" and has manfully resisted this siren call for four years.

 

You can see that his honest efforts to stay a democratic soldier in the face of all importunity has worn him down.

I think the majority of Thai voters are aware of things, but are almost powerless to change things.  At least I hope they are aware.

Legal affairs which in Thailand are not debated just approved by a rubber stamp committee.  His job is just one big charade. 

 

If he did step down, the evil little troll would take over.  Evil troll or Elmer Fudd is not much of a choice.  Both usurpers allow for government to run wild without oversight.
