Deputy Transport Minister Pairin Chuchotethavorn has instructed the Airports Department to test facial recognition technology at the department's airports.

Pairin said the technology, which is being used in other countries, would speed up the check-in and boarding process at airports as passengers would not have to produce their ID card.

The technology should be tested at the department's airports first, Pairin added.

First off, when did anything ever speed up the process of getting through an airport? You’ll have to stand staring at a camera which will just add more time.

Second, you only have to look at how China is using this technology to see where this is leading.

Facial technology was tested long time ago at the barber shop in Don Muang airport.

Cheers, that was just superb!

edit: There's a face I've not come across before.

Brave New World and Big Brother rolled into one - and the Powers that Be just love it.

People are being herded and treated like so much cattle - and most of them cannot even notice that they are being enslaved: more and more unwarrantable intrusion into our lives, more and more surveillance (which provably does NOT stop crime), more and more loss of liberty and privacy.

The younger generation do not even realise that the world need NOT be like this - and indeed, that it was not like this. But tip-toe, tip-toe, tip-toe - into technological fascism (combined with its political twin).

I for one will NEVER be happy with any of it.

Taking notice of who is coming and going across borders is pretty important information, however whether the thais will correlate this info in any useful way is another story.

It's meant to speed up immigration.

How does it provide "more and more unwarrantable intrusion into our lives, more and more surveillance (which provably does NOT stop crime), more and more loss of liberty and privacy."

is there something?

I've seen them refusing to take it off at the immigration and they could pass like that. I forgot where on which airport it was.

reminds me of the little saudi boy separated and lost from his mother at a large shopping mall. when security tried to help locate his mother they ask him "what does your mom look like?  the boy answers, "i dont know, i never saw her"

What is meant by "the department's airports" as opposed to "the airports" (i.e., all/any of the country's airports)?

Works great in Oz, on the way to immigration you scan your passport,  get a ticket, go to the gate insert the ticket look at the camera and away you go. But that only works for ozzies/kiwis and e-visas. So once they have e-visa's it should be fine.

I dont see the Australian system as great, first you queue for a scanning machine, then you queue for the camera gate. Not sure why you cant just scan passport and photo at one gate. Last trip with thai wife, she was through the manual system with her Thai passport before I was through the epassport system.

As every "major" terrorist group started off or was strongly supported by "western governments", who has won? maybe it was planned this way ????

Or am I "thinking too much" ????

Nobody would have agreed to the huge invasion into our private lives without the threat of the "terrorists"

They got us under watch now, no going back! ????
