Car insurance - not owned by me

Featured Replies

Hi , we spend 6 months in Thailand every year and usually hire a car locally. This year a friend has offered us the use of a car for the duration of our stay. It’s an older model Honda, I think late 90’s.

what insurance can I get in Thailand for this car if it’s not owned by me ?

where would be the best place to buy it ?

I will I’ll have my IDP and stuff

thanks for any help

Probably simplest and cheapest just to get your name added to the existing insurance. In fact in Thailand it is common for any driver to be covered by default.

Ok thanks , I’ll check with the owner

...,and sorry about the wrong forum .. I could’ve sworn it said ‘ Driving’ ...????

maybe I shouldn’t !

Thanks

If an older car, most likely only has the compulsory PoRoBor insurance. That is always valid for anybody who drives the car, but very, very limited cover. Getting 1st or 2nd class insurance may prove not possible for an older car, but I would recommend proper 3rd class, so in case you are responsible for an accident, at least you will be covered. Won't be terribly expensive as well.
