TRAFFIC CONGESTION: Kids to spy on lawbreaking parents

Published on May 15, 2003

Police have called on students to report parents who break road rules in an effort to ease traffic congestion around Bangkok schools.

The behaviour record of students whose parents receive three strikes for traffic offences will be affected.

The new school term starts tomorrow.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner Pol Maj General Adul Saengsingkaew announced the “Love Your Children, Keep Discipline’’ scheme after meeting with traffic police, schools, public buses, and the city administration yesterday.

The scheme is one a number of new school initiatives to tackle traffic congestion. The others include senior students looking out for younger students and students being taught traffic laws so they can pass the information on to parents.

Under the “Love Your Children, Keep Discipline’’ scheme, students will be deployed to monitor parents during dropoffs and pickups.

The licence plate of offenders will be recorded and children will be asked to warn parents.

Some 20 schools have been identified as having especially bad traffic congestion. Six intersections that need special attention are Kasetsart, Ratchayothin, Ramkhamhaeng, Lam Sali, Sathorn–Surasak and Klong Tom.

Bangkok Christian College and Joseph Convent College have some 4,000 cars and 2,000 dropoffs a day respectively, adversely affecting traffic congestion from Sathorn intersection to Taksin intersection.

In another move to tackle traffic congestion, police have requested that schools in close proximity to each other open and close 10 to 15 minutes apart during the first two weeks of the new semester.

Bangkok Governor Samak Sundaravej has also floated the idea of traffic lights in badly affected areas changing every 90 seconds instead of the current four minutes.

Samak cited the intersection outside the National Institute Development Administration as being especially bad.

“Some motorists would rather keep left and make a Uturn as it is faster than waiting for the light,’’ he said.

Samak has also proposed that police be stationed at schools to escort children to class so parents do not have to park when they pick up or drop off their children.

hi'

what an horrible origin for such an idea ...

the fact is they had to do something about these "traffic-congestion", I live near by a school, and it's a real mess

everyday !

but, asking to kids to "warn" their own parents ... well, that's a real big step, and I'm not sure that it's in the right way,

read "right as rights" human rights ...

don't you remember this kid fighting his mother in court because he could not stand she was smoking, now she is not allowed to smoke in her own house !  where freedom has gone?

and the day emails could be taxed, the private internet will be dead, this might be their goal, keep it all on their side, and never let citizens use it, or we could be consider like acting against the well-doing of their world ...

sounds like science-fiction .. might no that much :o

choose your side ! and good luck

Hey I got a dirty look for buying "perrier" the other day at publix! I guess I must be a traitor huh? HA!

No, the ideology I follow is classic liberalism which is the same as the framers of the US Constitution. You do what you do and I do what I do and never the twain interfere ( without permission) with each others dreams and goals ( or something like that) IE: Libertarian.

As Otis might say, You "gotsta" be free.
